Each "Song" Will Have Values:

Strength: Wimpy>Accelerating>Sweeping (aka, twinkle twinkle>ska>Oh Fortuna)

Strength will be decided by the total numbe of units in the game, on all sides... sinifying the escalation of conflict, as enemies are routed it is likely that the "weaker" music will come back.

pwnage: Only a few units left, loseing badly, neutral, gaining the upper hand, almost won, hunting for remanents

Basically if you are losing, the music will be like danger/sad/hopeless music... as you start winning, the music will be all "I'm winning/conquring"ish

Phase: Building, Attacking, Defending, Stalemate

Calculated based on the average activity of all your units, for example, a slow build song at the start... industrial trance when hyper spamming... on the road rock and roll when a huge group of units are moving together... nice thrashing punk when you are attacking...

might need other calculations, but the advantage of the sytem is that people could just take their whole music collection and classify it with these 3 variables and the game would pick them at random and crossfade into them when the tide of battle shifts...

yeah... and this is why we will all have to wait a long time for anyone to do music "right" for this thing... also, when you go into "powerpoint" mode when you have 500 brawlers fighting eachother... the mp3 decompression isn't going to be very pretty sounding... hence why the orriginal used CDAudio... only hurt the gameplay when it switched songs...

The only genre of music you can really have in RTS's is classical. FPS you can use rock/metal, remember the doom1 music? That kicked ass, but could you imagine it in spring? It just wouldn't work.

And HipHop? I thought you want to encourage them not cause them to capitulate.

that's the great part of the idea... I like trance, rock and ska... you like classical, he likes emo... so you just set up your playlist to match what you think fits...

yup. Even though classical is better, it's good to have this thing open-ended.

Someone just write the stupid code and let everyone put there own music in different folders i.e. the Building Music folder or Attack Music folder.
If we argue over what music we like it'll never get done, so get it done and we can decide for ourselves.

Sinbad grasped the topic, it seems, and the simple question was one of feasibility. The short answer seems to be yes, it's possible, and yes, most of us think it's a good idea, but no, none of us are up to implementing it - gotcha. No need for hurt feelings - beyond a little html and a few games for the TI-82, I have no programming experience myself.

Happy gaming~

Oh, and Sinbad, if you think that referencing mp3s would create performance issues, by all means have it reference CD audio tracks instead, or allow the option. Most of us can handle burning our own CDs, and some of us even have our original TA discs.

I got an idea, how about when you are losing it plays rap because rap is crap so you'll immediately know that you are crap.

Lol, just kidding, there is nothing wrong with wrap. Ignore this post.

No hurt feelings here - feelings are for women and Arm players. Anyway, the little dink's keeping the topic alive. =P

Along those lines, I'm gonna start reading another book instead of checking in here while waiting for a game to start. First comes message boards, then blogging, then wearing dresses, then the other thing, then....

Have fun all. ~~/

i would LOVE to see music support in one of the next releases :)
different musictitles for different battle situations would be cool too, but for me 2 different music types for battle and for building (as in ta) would be largely sufficient, as i want to hear the OTA music :)

Does it count as a Monthly Topic Rotation if it's necromancy of an old topic rotation post?
