Being fired at out of sight.

Post by Das Bruce »

I remember, back in the old days, when playing age of empires a unit firing out of sight would give away its position, I always thought this seemed like a good idea. Could we use the 'outer los' for that too?

Would this be a good time to make my routine request for fire-finder radar capability?

That is actually a nice idea, think of it, most times is someone fired at you, it really would give away where they are...

WHY do we need to see them???

whats the fun about that??? we use long range just to fire at long range and we try to keep these units on a safe distance, hidden as well.
I mean whats the fun if you try to cover/hide your bertha's with radar jammers and AA/anti-nukes if you can see them were they are from the moment they fire... if you want to take out these -pain in the ass- then go search for them

and besides, you dont know were they are but your other units can fire back when they'r hit

You can calculate the trajectory of ballistic shots to find a building/unit...

And has anyone said so far that it wouldn't be optional, or that it would be used for AA/XTA? I can think of at least one mod where this could be helpful.

It will be better not to show the unit that is firing, but to show a "radar blip" there instead, with its usual slow drift. That way you won't know the exact position, but will know approximately where the shots are coming from. The blip should disappear a few seconds after the unit stopped firing.

Seriously guys, when you get fired upon, its kinda obvious where the shots are coming from? Just force fire >.<

I think that shots should be visable where ever they are on the map, as should explosions. But thats just me, and the fact that distant battles look really cool when you can only see dim flash's and your like "What are those guys doing?"

ok

yeah, solution like yuritch proposed with radar blip with a slow drifting-deviation that gets bigger if it's a plasma weapon over a laser weapon and the floating is bigger if the range is farther (nore difficult to detect
That would be a useful thing and units could fire at this floating radar blip

As long as it's not forced on every single mod LIKE AUTO RADAR TARGETTING HINT HINT I don't really care.

I think everything in Spring should be mod chosen, so as to make each mod their own game. But thats just me.

(why are my posts describing possible features always contain requesting a new tag?.. I see a trend..)

A unit (maybe weapon) tag "FireRevealRadius" could define how far away from enemy units the firing unit must be to be detected, another tag "FireRevealAccuracy" could define how accurate would be the positioning (the dot wouldn't be roving, it would be firmly set in place, regardless of how accurate the initial placing). There could be also a "HitRevealAccuracy" to define how accurate would be the location of the enemy unit that has attacked and damaged one of your units.

Yeah, it's so obvious that it's still not optional after a year and a quarter...
