Non-irritating way to draw a player's attention

What's a good method of drawing a player's attention to a unit or units? Ideally it's not something that would be seen very often. I wouldn't want to make markers for it though, that's a bit over-the-top.

Glowing groundplate? Glowing unit? I thought about even having a warning image appear when appropriate, sort of like the "nuke ready" widget.

What would you recommend?

Have a graphical ping on the map display, and a visual effect on the main display, with a sound.

Tie to a keybind, prevent players from using more than once per second, voila. If you want to convey more information, have the keybind bring up a small menu of choices- "build porc here!", "attack here!", etc.

fade-in and fade-out works pretty well

must find out how to convert flash to gif the way i want it to.
