Hey, i have recently found what i believe is the easiest way to map. using a blender 3d!
first design your map in blender, pretty simple stuff there.
start with a mesh plane, subdivide it 4-5 times, shape it how ever you want. using the distributive edit tool can be great for this.
Keep in mind your proportions.
once you have got it to a shape that you like follow this tutorial to render a height map out of it: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D ... _Heightmap
Good luck and have fun

I don't think I prefer blender for generating height fields. I guess it's kind of nice to be able to see the height field in 3d, but still, you have alot more tools with most other dedicated height field generators and even image suites.
Blender also really isn't helpful at all for generating the texture.

Have you even ever made a map?ironized wrote: first design your map in blender, pretty simple stuff there.

not fully released, and by design i mean shape it out of a plane. not plan.

mapping in blender??? Screw that! lol
l3dt has a 3d heightfield editor, I generally make all min in photoshop anyway, but all that work for a heightfield? You gotta be out of your mind O_O

I want to be bale to place units and see where each one can pass while making the heightmap.

You can sortof accomplish this using my HeightMapTweak program. It will provide a color-coded overlay of your height map indicating slopes. You have to manually configure the slopes, though - it doesn't know about individual units. By default it's configured for BA slope. Green = everyone can pass, yellow = kbots only, red = only AT.I want to be bale to place units and see where each one can pass while making the heightmap.
