Complete Newbieness

Post by imboss77 »

Hello! I am 14 years old. This is the first forum I have ever joined so I am a HUGE noob. I have recently gotten into C++ and Python. I played Spring with my older brother.(I cannot remember which mod) After he started his own business after collage and started living on his own, I could no longer play Spring on his laptop. For a long while, I had forgotten about Spring. Recently, I remembered the game existed. Playing a few bot games I remembered how fun it was, but I have always wanted do design my own RTS game. I was hoping I could start developing simple things for the game. I just need a little help to get started, someone to show me the ropes. Is there anything I need to do before I start developing?

First thing you should do is learn to use the forum search and read the wiki!

While we are happy to direct you to the ropes it's up to you to figure out what to do with them... try not to hang yourself!

We're all faking it and you, lucky 14yo that you are, are in the prime time of your life because you will never again have so much time to spend figuring out how stuff works before having to do it in a situation with consequences and responsibility. Raw talent is only as good as the hours and hours and hours and hours of time you put into developing and refining it.

(sorry, I'm a "Dad".... I bet I just sounded super lame... anyways)

Long and short of it is a scripting language called Lua... everything else is just figuring out how all the pieces work together... one good place to start would be to find an existing project and wrap your head around it by working with the developer and helping them in some way.

The easiest way to start developing is to begin playing an existing game and try to make a widget that does something for it - something small and simple like "place a marker everytime a commander dies". In this case your starting point is http://springrts.com/wiki/Lua_Beginners_FAQ.

Yes, yes you did.
