3ds max: i need rectangles but i have triangle polygons

Post by Optimus Prime »

Hi

I designed a model with 3dsmax and importet it with 3do builder. The problem now is, that when i select a polygon, its a rectangle out of 2 triangle. I dont know if its ok if i work with triangles, but all other models use rectangles for texturing. How can i make rectangles out of triangles?

Would be nice if someone can help me

I bet you can let 3dsm work with rectangles.
Might want to look that up in the helpfile.
AFAIK 3do builder can handle triangles, but it's a tough job getting the textures right.
Preferable: use s3o.

i know that 3ds can handle rectangles and i know, that its a lot of extra work texturing triangles intead of rectangles. So how can i make rectangle polys out of my triangles?
I exported the party into s3o files already...

According to Maelstrom's modelling tutorial .pdf, .3ds format only supported triangles. I figured that it was true because whenever I change something to .3ds format, it gets converted into triangles. I remember using a program that had a "quadrangulate" function and a "triangulate" function, to turn a model from triangles into squares and vice versa... but the program just slips my mind. If I do remember it, I'll come back to you about it.

It's Wings. Newer versions have the untriangulate function.

wings 3d: http://www.wings3d.com/
probably a manual with the install.

as for 3dsm, can't it export the model to a format that can support rectangles? (say .obj)

Wish I could be more helpfull, but I have as much experience with wings as you do.

It's probably not perfect though, so it'd be smart to give your model a quick check after the untriangulating to make sure it hasn't mutilated it anywhere that there was SUPPOSED to be a triangle.

U can make quad model using SY's old 3d MAX to 3DO plugins
to do this best is using surfacing (spline modelling) technique...
make sure everything is quad and every line is straight (not bezier/curve) and pray for some luck, you ll need it .....
SY never update their 3do exporter too but it work properly with 3ds max 4 and 3ds max5

Oh and Im not Maelstorm

thank you all for your help!
You can make rectangles with 3dsmax7 too. You just need to export the objects to .obj and not to s3o. :)
