Look, I'll email the GW team about it and find out. Will that make you guys happy? (PS, I really don't want to make a W40K-but-called-something-else mod)

The disclaimer method is the way to go. List every single trademark we use and credit GW. Plus the big banner across the top of every page "All trademarks (c) by GAMES WORKSHOP Ltd.. This project is in no way affiliated with GAMES WORKSHOP. " really hammers home the point...

Lets put this into perspective here, Epic has practically been sidelined by GW, its no longer part of their core business. We're never going to see titan on titan combat in any other game...

Shame that they're high-poly, and that Space Marines have already been done (by the WTA team. No Termies or Land Raiders though)

We (I) am working on the Imperial Guard

me and sabutai have been battin some ideas around about the website. one thing that came up was a True name for the mod.

one idea was:

Spring: Legions 40k

what do u think? kinda combines the three big parts of this project: Spring (duh), Warhammer 40k and Titan Legions (original name for Epic)

Heres a temporary website:

http://www.geocities.com/tigard81/sl40k/

I thought about "Epic 40K" but it is the exact name of one of their products. I can change the website if you want to. But i wouldnt use Epic 40K cause one might think it was made by GW.

Just my two cents.

I use wings3d (is free, and good for low poly modelling with a not at all steep learning curve)

Benito uses Silo. Not free, supposed to be good for low to medium poly models

If you're taking about mod download size, I have no idea how big it will be.

Apparently Silo is good for high poly too. I tried to create a Thousand Sons Chaos Space Marine, but after modelling just the head and egyptian style head dress thing, I had over a 1000 polys. After a second attempt I managed to get it down to 300, but still just his head...

Wings is around 3MB download I think, Silo just shy of 4MB. For a 3D package Silo doesn't cost that much, which is why I played the exchange rates and bought it when the pound was strong against the dollar. Looking forward to v2 some time soon hopefully... There's a learning edition and 30 day trial download on the Nevercenter website.

High poly units are not an issue. See Caydr's post here.

Benito, I'm sure that you can use your polies effectively. Pointlessly high poly is bad, but since polies aren't really a big issue anymore, feel free to make really stunning models =)

I'm not an Epic player, but this sounds like it could be really cool, so keep up the good work.

Oh I'm all for high polies, its just that

A: I suck at UV mapping
B: Lower poly models are easier to uvmap
C: I suck at making skins
D: See B, replacing 'uvmap' with 'skin'
E: There is a minor improvement in speed, and with something of epic's scale, you want all the room you can get to cram more units into the fray

Scale is limited more by pathfinding issues than anything else. If you create 1000 cube units (four faces each) and tell them to move, you're going to start watching a slideshow, not a game.

Hopefully optimization is somewhere on the dev list after the linux port.

as much as everyone says taht poly count doesn't matter its got to matter somewhere. but then i again i don't really know anything in that area so feel free to ignore me

we need to get some more people to help with modeling esp. working on the Tau assuming taht we still wanna do them?

there isn't alot of units for them compared to the IG though that may change in february when the new codex is released :-)

As far as I could keep track of the mod there are several races planned:

Space Marines - HUMANS, They are done allready by someone else.
Eldar - They are done allready by someone else.
Imperial Gruard - HUMANS, Guessmyname is working on these.
The Titans should be buildable by the humans.
Tau Empire - This species is backed by popular demand
Tyranids - Discussions have been going on how to implement them. And I want them :-)

So what's left and what could be done?
Chaos - A mixture of Space Marines warped by Chaos and all sized Demons. Basically a refitted Space Marine race. Okay its lotsa work too.
Spaceorks - Would need lotsa work.
Dark Eldar - Don't know about these.
Necrons - Lets do something else first .
