i'm just curious how many units this engine will be able to handle... as they use a server-client model and not a synchronous engine as spring, network traffic will be much more / the limitating factor for many units.
also for a crowdfunding project i would like to see it as an opensource-engine... let's see what happens.

Woot$1,100,000 - Naval units and Water Planets
Asteroid tsunamis FTW!
$1,300,000 - Gas Giants and Enhanced Orbital units
This stretch goal is to add gas giant planets (similar to saturn or jupiter) to the game and an expanded set of orbital units with unique gameplay

I dunno, I would be really surprised if they didnt reach the initial goal. I think 1.5-1.3 million is a realistic endgoal for them, but I may be wrong. Getting linked from PA didnt seem to do all that much tbh.
It depends on the strech goals as well, if goal #3 and 4 are that awesome (Im pretty sure one of them will be a campaign and another will be a planetwars-type metagame), then they should create a lot of incentive among normal backers to contribute more money.
Also, the paypal donations should count towards the strech goals, and I have a feeling they will. I dont know how much extra that is, but it may be enough to push it over the mark.

I was looking forward too generals 2, but the news of its making was too good to be true, esp because of EA involvement. Although graphically and gameplay wise i think it will still be quitte amazing... The free to play aspect change can only fuck it up.
Hope to see this planetary annihilation game make it in the end. I do have my worries that it turns out to be like senna's mod. Fucussing on bigger and more is better.
And the simulated spherical word limits i dont mind too much since else your starting point cant be located in a corner and because of this you can be attacked from any side. I find that the best spring maps are the rectangular maps for this very reason.

Yeah seems a bit like it, what with the new announcement that they'll put in water and gas planets also if they get enough money. This just implies to me that they won't have proper focus into the design, rather implementing whatever AWESOME thing people can think of, than having a coherent set of units that are even possible to balance in a tight way.Floris wrote:Hope to see this planetary annihilation game make it in the end. My take on this is that they are gambling... it's going to take 2 million+ to develop the game they are promising and they expect <30% of the people who would buy this kind of game to back... they are using KS to gauge interest in a concrete way and get some "free" publicity...

+ I'm sure they will find it easier to get backing for the project if they already have 1-1.5 mill in the bank for it. Imo they were planning to do the things they have planned in the goals anyway, but yeah, listening too much to AWESOME feature requests can be an issue (space combat is sthing i wouldnt want to see as too prominent, thats a whole diff game)

Well, apparently they published their latest game by themselves so they should have some money of their own too to use on this.

Heh, I just signed up on the forums, after playing Spring for years, in order to create this thread... and found it already existed!

It's just spreading limited resources thin, on something that to me feels quite extraneous. When you have to consider how a pure land planet will work, how a full sea planet will work, how a mixed planet will work, and then how those will interact and how players on different planets are able to compete with each other... It just becomes tons harder also to just desing the most basic ground combat and planetary interaction when you can't do it a vacuum but must always consider how it'll affect this or that gametype.
I'd rather they focus on the planet traveling mechanics first and foremost, so that those are as interesting and varied as possible. It's not an easy task even by itself to get right.
Btw has anyone found more interviews from them?

I'd really like to have the navy, but not really the gas giant thing. Mainly because navy can interact meaningfully with land, but gas giant planet units, not so or I don't see how.
Are you saying Total Annihilation or Red Alert or Supcom or whatever other RTS land units would have been made different if there was no sea? I don't see how.Sure, but if they're including sea, gas, etc. they'll have to take those into consideration when designing the ground combat too.

First thought: Without a space navy how do you transport units from planet to planet (without just magically appearing over there which would make defense too hard)?
Second thought: Provided ranges can reach out into space you could use asteroids (or possibly even artificial stellar bodies) as spaceships, stick some heavy defenses and thrusters on them and do a fly-by!

The few things im worried about though is AI.
Summerizing a few things
- The spore like planets are due to the size of which they wanted to portray ie a standard 8x8 map. This is not the case with larger maps plus its a promotional video, also the moons, asteroids is just a plain layering zoom out trick.
- A few things to summarise art cost is low because of their projected stlized art style think [age of empires online]
- 1 faction, but many different units. [but thats because of budget and is likely to change]
- There not building everything from scratch (there apart of an existing infrastructure)
- Learnt a ton from multiplayer there will be lan/server support, no laggy client machine slowing down everyone. (so i guess that means there will be multiplayer lol)
- Experimental uber units are unlikely for time being [apart from the asteroid] which scale in size and destructive power.
- Economy will be streaming like TA (frack you sub com II)
- Naval and orbital are post core game goals.
