Spherical Maps and the like

Post by diggz2k »

What ever happened to all the chatter about shpere maps and donits and any other shape. Did I miss the "Spring can't do it" post or something? Cause I want to see this happen.

Spring cant do it.

With out a major rewrite of everything, this isnt going to happen. Not that I wouldnt like to see it, its just not really worth the bother.

Theres a problem with making a square into a sphere, it just doesn't fit.

Yep

This would be sixteen different flavours of really freaking hard.

May as well request arbitrary (non-landscape) maps with arbitrary gravitational fields. Just as feasible with the current engine. Hell, why don't we port BSP-map support to Spring?

Shpere maps would be pretty tricky and hard to implement. It would be cool, but I think it's too much work and it would produce a lot of bug.
So perhaps in one year ?

Arg. This would involvte to rewrite pretty much all the code.
And I don't think it's a better idea than the current way.

I think pxtl was being sarcastic here...

I say for people who still think that it could be done ^^

(Thought I read to quickly his message)

Starflight + New Graphics + MMO + Procidural Terrain + More starsystems = To KICKASSNESSENESS!

PS: Starflight was one of the early "Morrowind" type games for the the Sega Genisis. You have a ship, crew and some money. Here are the keys, have fun.

I've already had some dialog with the creator of that system and it seems there are some things that require cutbacks to increase performance.

Texturing is done procedurally, as are details, and the engine currently requires a high-end system.

There are numerous other factors involved. But imagine getting everything working and actually building an army on a PLANET!

THAT is the next level.

Ok, so spherical maps are impossible. How about infinate scrolly maps ala Civilisation. Scroll off the left of the map and onto the right...

No, we decided that that would be an exponential amount of suck.

There was a huge debate about the different types of maps we could do, infinately scrolling ones were decided against because you could just take a weasel and send it off for enternity so if com death is off you'd never loose, and it could get annoying.

Have you ever try civilisation?
You don't seem to know what you're talking about.

It could just look a bit weird on very small map when zommed out.

Maybe I misinterpreted. Can you elaborate?

It's not so easy to explain. Perhaps this little drawing could help :

Image

the map is still a square, but units can go from the left to the right like it were a cylindre

And you can do the same for the y axes to "simulate" a round map.
But, as we always display the map with a "top down" view, if the map is really small, this could lead to show 2 times the same part of the map.

Then you get a torus, not a sphere...
To be honest I prefer a flat map instead of a torus ;)

Problem with that is that If your base is at the top and theirs the bottom you can just send your units up the map so that they appear at the bottom, and thus into the rear of his base.

but if u make the top and bottom with no access
i like the idea of map that u can go "around" that gives more attack directions ... u can stalk in corner anymore cause there wont be one ;)
