Re: Random WIP
Wombat, through all the models I dont really see a common style yet, are you modelling just randomly or concept the units beforehand?

gimp is gimped, don't you have wine?Wartender wrote:i'd rather not pay hunderds of dollars, i cba to torrent it, and i'm on linux anywayrattle wrote:ditch gimp, get photoshopWartender wrote:where do you people learn how to texture? that looks awesome! i don't even know how/where to get started learning... i open up the image in GIMP and am left without the slightest idea of what to do...
What I do in Photoshop in less than a minute took over an hour in gimp only to find out that gimp does not have feature x, y or z. For example the simplest layer mask manipulation took ages in gimp because it was lacking many many shortcuts that other programs didn't.
For drawing it doesn't really matter much what you are using but texturing is whole different thing.
Paint Shop Pro is a good alternative indeed, was usingit before switching to PS7.
Re: Random WIP
I am the speaker for gimp! I don't think most people even need masks for example I never used them before now with the latest unit I'm texturing and didn't really need it for that either.rattle wrote:gimp is gimped, don't you have wine?

What gimp does have is way less steep learning curve and it's free! Less heavy on the comp too. Oh and it took an hour for rattle to do something in Gimp cause he hasn't used it... something I do in gimp takes hours to do in Photoshop even tho I have a lot of experience with both. As I design websites and leaflets etc...
I also have teached many persons to use gimp and it took few hours for them to learn most of it... and that is cause most of it's features are not hidden under hundreds of pages of garbage features that "some" commercial products have.
edit: forgot to say that gimp has layer masks they are just little simple, white is visible and black is invisible.

Re: Random WIP
What are you talking about, Gimp supports masking. I use it all the time!Masse wrote:I am the speaker for gimp! I don't think most people even need masks for example I never used them before now with the latest unit I'm texturing and didn't really need it for that either.

Didn't say gimp didn't have masks. I said that most people don't even use masks.CarRepairer wrote:What are you talking about, Gimp supports masking. Re: Random WIP
personal preference guys! with experience and skill, any programs limit is according to your own talents.
you can cut a board with a saw, an axe, a karate chop... but when you're done with any of the methods, you still arrive at the same goal
i use fireworks for my stuff; very procedural and fast; i find it gives me reasonably good results and it's super easy to go back and change things after you're done.
haha i cant imagine not using layers, that would be like not using a mouse for me :D
i really would love to see a texture made with "kidpix" complete with the little kitten and rainbow stamps... anyone up for the challenge?

Re: Random WIP
Nice work Beherith :) The textures are looking sharp, what mod are they for?

Re: Random WIP
Personally, I think you should ditch the AK's visor thingie. I liked the 'faceless metal' look on the OTA one.
Re: Random WIP
Well there is a cinematic model it could be based off of, it's more simplistic though, and it's obvious you're trying to embellish the OTA look a bit.Guessmyname wrote:Personally, I think you should ditch the AK's visor thingie. I liked the 'faceless metal' look on the OTA one.
The only question I have is how do they look in game? :D
The one next to the con. Necro maybe?Das Bruce wrote: I'm not sure what the one you're refering to is.
Re: Random WIP
You need to first learn the basics, So just launch Gimp and draw anything that comes to your mind while you do it try different tools that gimp has (they aren't hard to use) if you haven't used layers before, you start from that :)Wartender wrote:teach me D:

Basically = mess around and make it look like a tard, then cut out the piece that you think looks cool. You need to first learn the basics, So just launch Gimp and draw anything that comes to your mind while you do it try different tools that gimp has (they aren't hard to use) if you haven't used layers before, you start from that :)

Re: Random WIP
My guess would be peewee (looks more like a peewee than an ak imo, but that's just semantics), thud, storm, and crasher

Re: Random WIP
Not by a long shot, but it probably has most of what people would need for medium - advanced texturing in spring. It's interface is balls tho.azaremoth wrote:Paint Shop Pro is an true alternative to Photoshop. It is nearly as powerful...

Re: Random WIP
BA performance is balls because it's using 3do and a lot of very old and very bad models. Coupled with the use of default engine effects, this drags performance through the mud. Not to mention horrifically wasteful unit scripts...Wombat wrote:i dont say that high detail model lags itself, i say that its BA and its high details model X 100, but well, i hope im wrong
Re: Random WIP
@forb: ttttriple combo :D
But seriously, I use procedural texturing because I find the learning curve to be much easier, and the results consistent, reproducible and decent.
