1. A good general place to start reading is here.

There are also numerous sticky'd help and how-to guides around here.

If you're just getting going, you have a fairly lengthy road ahead of you, including a fairly steep learning curve- but there are people here willing to help you, if you can help yourself.

2. There is no single piece of software that is "the editor". Most of the stuff you see in these games is either source code people built with the Lua programming language, built-in engine functionality (that you need to understand the stuff in the link above to really get) or, in the case of 3D art assets, involves using UpSpring, for which there are a number of tutorials (and a video).

Basically, the engine involves learning coding from the start, though.

If you are a content developer who has built or can demonstrate that you're capable of building content to meet a game specification, another possible way to do stuff is to start making content (once you understand how S3Os work) and see if you can find a coder who would be willing to help with that side of things. However... I must warn you, that you'd have to be pretty amazing (and fast) before most folks would take an interest, as coding a project is very non-trivial.

Lots of different programs are used to make stuff for games on this engine, along with most other game engines; as Argh said, there is no single 'editor.'

Also, good luck on whatever you're trying to make. :-)

Well, there are a few "map editors" aren't there?

Either way, fundamentally, first you have to decide what you're going to do. There are very few people who can sit down and make a full game in Spring, unless they're willing to make a small one - most games are made by a team.

So think about what you want to focus on. Making units? Learn modelling/animating? Making the overall ruleset and stats? Learn Lua. Making maps? There are several tools for that, too.

What do you want to do?

I'm always torn when confronted with this situation. Did we lose a completely useless ADD addled fool, or, if given the attention could he become a worthwhile contributor?

I take bets on the odds.

In this case:

His enthusiasm lasted less than 12 hours. Is it normal of us to expect him to at least look at the 100 tutorials posted, and just perchance stumble upon springmapedit?

a map is a good place to start. check the mapping forum for various tutorials and suggestions of software. SpringMapEdit can create an entire map from start to finish and has a 3d interface.

Neat program, but kinda flaky on vista/win7 64bit systems.

I think SME works better if you disable aero.
