Don't GIVE UP! I loved playing OTA WD, and a functioning Spring version would be pure epic.

Well, I really want to start on this again...
So I decided to try it again, give me a few days to get my tools downloaded...again.
OMFG! I can't find any way to download my last version...
I guess I have to start from scratch, this could be a good thing.

great to see this might be back in action!
yeah what everyone else said, reckon your best chance for maintaining quality and motivation is start by perfecting a small part of the game, for example, infantry combat and models. just make an infantry game only for starters, and when that is working well and fun to play start building up from it-check out s44 for supressable infantry than run, crawl, get pinned etc and for squad production- your not going to have a shortage of testers

I'm willing to help, as I'm sure some other members of the S44 team are.

Problem is, any potential sides are gonna be completely lopsided. Ever since the USSR went and selfishly broke up, modern warfare games have been at a loss for a "main protagonist" enemy faction. Everyone else has pussied up; Britain, France, Germany -- Europe -- they're all pussies now. Of all the former Soviet bloc nations, most of them are either immensely weak demogogues who'd get steamrolled by the US in a weekend or loser faux-democracies replacing all their Soviet-era crap with US-made crap. And China, well, they could be a major protagonist, but they're pussies too -- we've never gotten a chance to see what they can do on the battlefield. They'll either get bitchslapped in the most humiliating way in history, or storm over the fucking planet. But we've got nothing real to actually go by.
And then there's the middle east, and everyone expecting some ragtag bands of terrorists and nationalists to somehow become a major protagonist. Yeah, try making an RTS with the fucking Taliban. You'd have two units, both of which would be cloakable, you'd lose every battle, and only hope to win a game by the other guy getting so bored he quits.
I'd go with China, Russia and the USA myself, as a three-faction starter. Then you can always do other nations, even individually; we're not exactly talking about a huge campaign. Individual games are nothing more than a single battle in a large multi-front war so having France face off against China isn't all that out of the question. It wouldn't be doing it alone, afterall.
Either that, or you could just take over Flozi's cold war idea. Atleast that would be simpler to understand from a game design perspective.

I have been a fan of Spring WD, I have the old files if you're looking for them. Last time I tried them, they wouldn't start up (gave me an error,) but that was quite a long time ago. Maybe the engine update fixed it. I'll send the link to you over a PM, GZ. Anyone else who wants it, just ask me.GrOuNd_ZeRo wrote: OMFG! I can't find any way to download my last version...

you could just group all the easten countries into an insurgent faction, ZH style

Is the old WD still playable? and if so, is there still a active link for it?
Re: Let's try this again, Spring WD, coming...some day.
I have written a fairly lengthy game-design document for doing modern warfare of the Vietnam / Iraq / Afghanistan / Indonesia model in a RTS, if anybody ever wants to read it.
I think it would be cool as hell to play, but it's so divergent from what I'm doing with P.U.R.E. that I don't have time to pursue it atm.
I agree with SpikedHelmet, though. WD never made much sense, as a sim of anything remotely realistic.
Maybe instead of facing the mountain again... do something a little more sharply focused, smaller in content requirements and in tune with the times?
Say, warfare between rival African factions, using a relatively small number of nicely-done units and a lot more attention spent on game design than content this time? You probably have all the models you need for that already, with minor fixes.
I know you keep trying to climb back on the wagon... so, why not take on something a little more satisfying than attempting to finish something this vast all over again? Or if you're gonna do it... get help, or ask around the C&C crowd to get models (because practically everything in WD's giant arsenal has been done for C&C mods, frankly, so why reinvent that wheel).
Or, lastly... just fix all the COB stuff and other minor crap that's broken work again, make nice FX, and call it a day? I doubt if that would take more than a month, and it's a better starting place than, "I have 5 S3Os but I need 100".
Anyhow, all of this is just random musing, take it or leave it.

Despite the big clusterfuck of work that is S44, I'd still suggest a complete start-from-scratch. When we began looking into porting AATA to Spring we decided to start completely from scratch to make the most of the Spring engine. While the workload is/was immense, it was well worth it for everything we've been able to do. Nothing we've done would have been possible if we stuck to a direct port.
