0.79 unable to start mod/game other than colorwars or THIS

Post by KaiserJ »

hi guys, just working away trying to get the new spring version going...

for some reason it hangs up loading mods other than THIS or colorwars... just goes to a black screen.

i have downloaded and re-installed the the latest version (0.79.0.2) and applied the patched exe from the springrts.com homepage. spring settings are all the same as they were before the new version.

working with vista32.

stuff that might have buggered it up

-before installing 0.79, i deleted 0.78 and the rest of spring from program files on my main HD (i saw people having problems due to vista access permissions) and installed the new version onto a different drive.
-when starting springlobby in the first try at installing 0.79, it said it couldnt find unitsync.dll, and i would be unable to sync in multiplayer... i uninstalled, deleted the spring directory, and installed again. the problem remained until i went to the options tab in springlobby, then the spring tab, then clicked apply (the paths were already there, i dont understand what happened, but that at least made the unitsync msg go away.)

theres my latest infolog, trying to start up a game of BA... seems to crash on parsing unit icons

(sound is disabled, i saw lemmis thread and thought that might help)

any help to get spring running is hugely appreciated, im going to try running mods using 79 and 79.0.1 exes if i can grab them and see what happens.

any suggestions or help is massively appreciated... ive harassed lurker a lot in the last day or so, so i should probably take it easy on him and spread my misery around lol

all hail color wars! greatest game of all time

could you try the latest test build from http://planetspring.free.fr/spring/installer/ and see if the problem remains?

thx for the reply imbac...

i think your post was prior to the 79.1 release; i downloaded it, installed it... problem remains; only colorwars or THIS will start.

i can't see a spring.exe on that page with a higher version number than 79.1 :(

any thoughts or suggestions as to how i can proceed from here?

make sure you didn't accidentally doubleclick on any of spring base files. try purging your mods and/or maps (rename mods/maps directories). try reinstalling into a clean directory.

Check weird directories for files hanging around - have you purged the VirtualStore? youruserfolder\AppData\Virtual Store\Program Files\Spring

Also, try running spring.exe as Admin (right-click, select "run as administrator")

I can't start Spring even on a clean install (it just hangs, producing no errors).

EDIT: It takes up 40-50 MB of RAM and stays at 50% CPU usage forever

thx for the suggestions...

tried re-installing into a "clean" directory, same results... i've gone around and deleted all of the old content as far as i could see, but was not aware of the directory you mentioned pxtl (i promptly visited it and deleted all spring related stuff)

so now i've re-installed; same sort of problem occurs; spring hangs on a white screen when i try to start 'er up with anything other than colorwars or THIS.

"Fatal Error - Error binding socket : Unknown error" is the error message when i try to run spring.exe as an administrator.

could you guys break it down for me... how can i remove all traces of spring from windows vista in order to get a 100% clean install? i have a feeling there must be something lurking still somewhere from the .78 series of installs that's screwing me up (a config file, a registry entry, something that should have been removed and yet remains); where do i look, what do i remove?

i'm dying to play again, thanks for the help so far

I forgot, did you wipe out the spring config file? It's in appdata\local.

If you can't bind a socket double check for any other springs and see if springlobby is set to eat that port in the torrent system.

hokey dokes. fresh installing now.

this is what i did / am doing as we speak.

1 ) used the "uninstall spring" tool.
2 ) physically deleted the spring directory (removed all content/folders etc)
3 ) drove in my virtual minivan to the virtual store, there was no spring information there (i made sure hidden folders and files were revealed)
4 ) checked that path you mentioned lurker, the appdata/local... nothing was in there about spring, but i DID find config files for both springlobby and spring in appdata/roaming, deleted those muh fuhs.
5 ) deleted desktop shortcuts
6 ) performed an extensive search for anything with spring in the name on all drives; found some spring crap in some random folders i had copied onto the new computer from a usb key (if it turns out this was the problem, self-d irl.) in the form of maps and mods and widgets.
7 ) rebooted my comp
8 ) installed spring, grabbed ota content etc, BA, and deltasiege
9 ) same freaking problem :(

what else might i need to delete in order to completely remove spring for a re- install? im starting to go bughouse with this; any suggestions are extremely welcome.

hrmmmz still working away at this

used the KP installer (that's a handy feature, being able to click the checkbox to delete the registry information on install, nice one there zwzsg)

tried to run KP single player, same problem as before (black screen w/ windows loading cursor)

i was enclined to try again after seeing spring 79.1.2 was released, so i installed that, and tried again... same problem. here is my infolog

the only thing that seems out of place is the second line... why does it say 0.79.1.0 when i installed 0.79.1.2 ? doesnt seem right...

i should note... when loading colorwars, i actually see a loading screen telling me about pathing etc and displaying a graphic, wheras with KP (and many others) i see nothing.

this is pretty insane; i'd love to be able to run spring on this computer; my old one is so slow and crappy in comparison. what are my options at this point...

install the gfx card i have sitting here and see if that works? (i have one all ready to go, but im thinking even of returning it if i cant run spring) set up for a dual boot and run spring on ubuntu or some linux variation? how about something to do with the security settings in vista... i dont know much about it, is there some setting from a fresh install that might confict with some spring mods?

I may be the one to blame for that. I made KP single player use an older Spring.exe because of some trouble with AI start pos. That still doesn't explain the black screens though.

installed ubuntu; i can play again!

ofc my drivers are a bit borked, i don't seem to be able to load map / unit textures... i have a video card sitting here in a box, but i think i'll probably take it back to the shop and return it and buy something more expensive now that i know i can play!

something very odd seems to happen with vista and the new version of spring; they just don't seem to get along all that well; i hope that eventually the problem i had will be isolated and addressed in order to get more vista users into the game.

cheers and thanks for your help, guys!

(if anyone can point me to a "good" driver for my onboard video for ubuntu that i can use in the meantime, i'd appreciate it)

The Unitsync.dll has been causing all sorts of errors for all the lobbies, and any other feature that requires Unitsync.dll. Could somebody fix it please?

That's because people are posting them in the Help and Bugs forum.

Bugs can not be tracked in a forum, if you see a good bug report (that phenomenon seldomly occurs unfortunately), ask the poster to put it in mantis.

I guess that's because the bugtracker is now buried in the Wiki instead of accessible from the front page.
