Xenolithic V4 - final

Post by Beherith »

So, the texture for the previous version was a little ridiculous, as was the amount of perlin noise added to the heightmap for bumpiness, so I completely remade the concept, leaving only the basic heightmap features intact. Made with World Machine 2.1 Basic edition and WICed.

This map is 5v5, only kbot passable (kbots pass everywhere), with some interesting twists:
There is no metal in the canyons, but they are immersed in an undulating, twisting fog, that periodically reduces visibility to very low in the depths of the canyons.

Radar has a hard time penetrating the crevasses, so you have to be on your toes to spot intruders and raiders.

Your task is made even harder by heavy snowfall, which makes it harder to spot units sneaking through times of thick fog.

Snow and fog are gadgets, and cannot be disabled. I tried to set them to be mapoptions, but Spring.3tions calls fail :(
I also tried to make snow flow with the wind, but I couldnt figure out how to pass a variable to the shader C code from lua.

This map is definitely not for the faint of heart!

Lua shaders should be enabled for this map.
Its system requirements aren't low, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Many thanks to:
trepan, user and aegis for their fog gadget
trepan for his snow gadget
Artturi for his texture template
BaNa for helping with the lua customization

So, download it, check it out because screen shots just dont do it justice, and most of all, have fun!

man, this is awesome. IMO time-varied fog can be used in so many win situations. I hope other peeps start using it too.

edit: Dude you barely mention it!

The map has fog that varies with time!
Billowing, receding fog that blankets the valleys every couple of minutes!

This map is like an actually epic version of the "epic" map! :P

I love the fog, adds an entirely new gameplay concept, and the reworking transforms it from an unmemorable map to something of the likes of which has never been seen before. It's awesome!

Nice. I'm loving the snow and the fog, you definitely did something new here. Had great fun specrunning on it yesterday

Didn't try playing on it yet, but looks like this could be a good kbot map instead of being just eyecandy... Even if not, I'd play it just for the eyecandy-part. Props.

Yeah, it might not get played much, but thats a different thing. This is a concept map, where I tried to introduce a new gameplay element. Also, if i can fix the gadgets to work on ati as well, and a few minor bugs, then it can be the basis for others to use in their concepts.
Besides, I think the heightmap is quite good, it was reworked with the fog in mind, and the map actually plays quite well.

Well maps with tunnels and a messy height map don't work well on this scale..
And the heightmap is not memorable at all..
If you say its a concept map for fog etc than great cause it seems you'v reached your goals..as a map to play on it doesn't seem to good but for a final say ill obviously have to play it a number of times.

Currently, there are three major bugs with the fog and snow widgets:

ATI cards cant render it, but I suck so much at openGL and lua that i have no clue how to fix this. Half fixed.

Commander explosions and some other explosions dont show up. FIXED

Map desyncs more often than it should, and for specific players. Re-dling and repathing doesnt help. FIXED

Oh, and if anyone is interested, here is the World Machine file for the layout, its made with basic, free edition
