Request: Promotion stuff
TaSpring really needs to be spreaded, so we do need promotion art like banners for forum signatures.
How should the possible new Spring players find their way into the spring community without advertising?
There are some links on the main page but unfortunatly they are all outdated.
So i suggest to create a collection of the finest banner/logo art, to make the promotion for spring easier.

Re: Request: Promotion stuff
I refuse to promote anything TA related in spring.
Re: Request: Promotion stuff
Firstly most TA mods look like Poo
Secondly advertising the Spring Engine as TASpring is old news
Mods/games should do there own advertising. The spring site is about discussion of the engine and works on the engine and the lobby. It also helps advertising mods/games but that material should be provided by the mods/games developers or fanboi's

That's the official stance.Otherside wrote:Mods/games should do there own advertising. The spring site is about discussion of the engine and works on the engine and the lobby. It also helps advertising mods/games but that material should be provided by the mods/games developers or fanboi's
It's content creators responsibility to advertise their product, the engine, being that it is an engine, is responsible primarily to the content developers. You don't see adds for Unreal Tech 4 on the TV or gaming mags, you see them for Gears of War and Unreal Tourny.
We might advertise the community to a limited degree at some point, but primarily we want the games to bring in new players, not the engine.

Well, for playing Unreal Tourny or Gears of War, u dont need the same lobby.SwiftSpear wrote: You don't see adds for Unreal Tech 4 on the TV or gaming mags, you see them for Gears of War and Unreal Tourny.

And nobody browsing on the internet and looking for a good open source rts game for linux/windows, cares about the mods at first.
They think spring is game, and not a loosly connected bunch of mods.
Imho u cant advertise only for ca, or xta, etc., because the mods are related to each other, u need the same lobby and if more people try spring, the mods also get more players.
Evolution of a normal spring player:
1. He/she sees TaSpring highly rated in a games list or on sourceforge ..., or he recognizes the advertising in a forum (what i was talking about at start).
2. He downloads spring, sees that most people play something called ba and fails totally at start, then he starts to understand the game mechanics and gets better.
3. Maybe after some days/weeks he tries the other mods, like ca, xta, nota, ...
4. And if he likes them, he maybe starts to play just these mods.
Thats why i think u cant advertise for one mod only, u need to present the whole spring community (maybe with its diffrent mods).

Re: Request: Promotion stuff
you have a very narrow and shallow view of what is available and it is that sort of attitude that misrepresents this engine as nothing more than TA 2. Good day sir.

you, mr smoth, have a very limited and/or distorted view on reality.
good night, sir.

Re: Request: Promotion stuff
you're both right to some degree. Looking at the chart, it is evident that only about 30% of players actually get to Caradhras' step 3, and only a little over 10% of players actually get to actively playing non-TA based mods.

So yes, Caradhras does have a narrow view of the engine, but so do many, many other players, over half, in fact. I'm actually pretty sure that Caradhras was actually outlining the average experience of most Spring Engine players, and in that, he is quite accurate. However, Smoth is very right that this sort of attitude "misrepresents this engine as nothing more than TA 2." also, Caradhras' second post was certainly not called for.

Everyone happily jolly now?

Re: Request: Promotion stuff
Thats largely because Spring is marketed as "omg TA in full 3d!" Its a self fufilling prophecy.
If I go to a WWII gaming forum and advertise S44, a Star Wars forum and advertise SW:IW, or an Anime forum and advertise Gundam, the players who join will possibly not even be *aware* of BA. Its just that this advertising isn't happening (for various reasons, mostly tied up with lack of completion) and the people who are currently being drawn in are being drawn in by "3d TA" so guess what they are interested in...
This comes up every 3 months, I can't believe that people still have trouble understanding this concept, its not a particularly difficult one.

I thought I regurgitated it well enough. I should have been more descriptive.
Re: Request: Promotion stuff
descriptive puke? mhm, delicious!
Re: Request: Promotion stuff
Here we see a prime example of laggy and slow to react 'official stances' that aim to prevent problems, but are onyl announced once the problems have ran their course, making the whole initiative utterly pointless and causing more problems in the process.SwiftSpear wrote:That's the official stance.Otherside wrote:Mods/games should do there own advertising. Statements such as these would usually save hours of thought and hundreds of posts of discussion if posted months earlier when the problem actually arises, even though the 'stance' already existed at the time.
The reasoning behind such humongous delays when they could instantly be submitted is unknown, however if stated when the topic arose, it would have an enormously beneficial impact. Instead we see the enormously detrimental impact of letting the problem get out of hand, causing the 'officials' more trouble than its worth, and for no reason at all, not to mention souring relations between community members of opposing opinions.
Re: Request: Promotion stuff
And if one had lurked properly, you'd already know theres 20+MB worth of official psd's png's jpegs for spring banners in varying sizes, not to mention the stamper tool, or the slew of community submitted banners for the header of this site.
