KDR you could've tell him how to/link to some wiki page instead of just "it can be done already"

You can technically do anything using Lua currently. It shouldn't be hard to implement this engine-side rather than making a hackish lua with invisible units and whatever.

Um... I already did this, as described (i.e., not hackish) in Merc Squad. Pretty easy part of the game design, IIRC. Maybe take a look at that?
