Model/Texture people interested?

Post by Forboding Angel »

Well cutting down to the chase...

I am not capable of models and textures needed for a professional look. That said, while I probably am "capable", I lack the knowledge needed to do it in any sort of a timeframe that makes sense.

So essentially I'm asking for team members. I'm not asking for people to just do stuff for me. This has been a one man show for far too long (exceptions being all the tons of lua that lurker has done for me, for which I am extremely grateful), and I would like to have some others to be able to bounce ideas off of, and help me create things.

The game design itself is open ended in the same was that TA's design was, meaning, that you can add units right and left, or stick with a select amount and still have a great game. So there is definitely flexibility there.

The units that are in the game now, I consider to be the "core" units of the game. In other words, everything you need to have a full featured game. These are the ones I would like concentrated on for the moment, but hell, branching out is fun and stress relieving :-)

Among this stuff let me also point out that you can fork it to make your own project (or just tie it in as a dependency, hell I don't care -- the side logo's do NOT need to be painted onto the textures), which was the whole point form the beginning anyway. I just wanted people to wait till the end of the campaign to do so, so that way I could get all of the necessities into the game. As multiplayer campaigns in spring are kinda not very good  I kinda went ahead and just did the stuff.

Anyone wanna join up? You might be surprised with how easy I am to work with, and how open I am to new ideas (even weird ones... Ask lurker, he'll have a load to say :-))

Edit: This obviously is about Evolution RTS, but I never said anything specifically linking, so just clarifying.

why do you guys keep trying to recruit here? This community is fairly tapped out.

http://www.moddb.com/ isn't though and there are many people willing to make models.

I'm not exactly asking for much of anyone's life really.

A few hours a week maybe? People do have lives. Including myself. And if they are free to use the content for their own project, well that's helpful... and a plus.

a few hours a week isn't enough to get something done. You need someone pulling roughly part-time hours.

Modeling / skinning isn't a trivial time investment for most people, Forb. While a few people like me have reached the point where we can speed-paint stuff, it still takes hours of work to produce anything- maybe an hour or so to model, another hour for the uvmap, and 2-3 hours to paint. I'm guessing most people take twice that long, or longer, and sometimes I go up to 10 hours, for really complex stuff.

Honestly, if you're at the point where you're comfortable uvmapping and setting things up for a basic skin, I'd say that the best way is to ask for a unit model, preferably with a concept drawing showing motions, etc., and then skin that. It'd save you time, and allow people who are willing to model but unwilling / able to skin well to participate, and would give you more practice at skinning, which is the hard part.

[EDIT]Got the June 14th release. I'll look it over.[/EDIT]

I understand that smoth and argh, but people have lives, and I am not going to slave drive them. I work myself to the bone, but I'm not going to try to force that on someone else. If they have an interest and vision in where it goes then they will work as hard as they feel like. Unfortunately, at this point, in many ways the game is getting too large and expanding too quickly for me to be able to keep up with all facets of it, therefore, I need help, and I need it fairly badly.

Or, I can go about redefining mediocrity.

Thanks for the tip about moddb. Maed poast.

About skinning, honestly if the UV isn't set up for me, then I really can't skin it, unless I do the UV myself, which is fine, but if the model is super complicated, then that poses it's own set of issues.

June 14th was my last patch? Christ. I've fallen behind :?

it is not a matter of slave driving, we are telling you that whether or not you realize it, a model can take between 8-20+ hours. Modeling, uv mapping and texturing are not that quick and they do take a long time. Unless you plan releasing 10 years from now then you will need someone who can offer a commitment to the art. I would be deceiving you if I said otherwise.

How do you honestly think that I don't already know that?

Some of us take what we can get and are happy about it.

Btw, at 1 model per week it would take more than 2 years. However, if there were say 2 or 3 or 4 people doing 1 model per week, then things start getting a little more attractive eh?

Mmm... If only there were that many willing volunteers.

While we've had several people working on models and textures, most of them have been notoriously unreliable - most of the stuff not made by us is done by small contributions from a wide range of things. Being wholly reliant on another person also means that unless they are totally committed to the project, if they disappear for a little while your whole process dries up and stalls.

Unfortunately, I've found that the only way to get things moving in Spring is to do it yourself. Another corollary to this is that people aren't really willing to commit heaps of time to a project where they have to do everything (and there's a huge amount of stuff to be done). If you start to do things yourself, and get some momentum up, I think you'll find that you'll find a lot more willing volunteers. That's what happened with IW anyway - people only really showed interest once it was clear that we could actually do it ourselves if we had too, but it was an active, moving project that people could assist with.

20+ hours? pfft.

I remember back in the ol' TA days, I could model, texture, script and text a unit in like 1 hour.

But I wouldn't say it takes anywhere near 20 hours per model. S44 easily has 200 or so unique models and textures, all created within the past ~16 months.

16 months á 30 days, taking 8 hours a day (more would be silly) makes an average of 19.2 hours per model... :P

You don't need to do shit for me tbh (tho believe me, I appreciate help from anywhere I can get it). Assuming that missions/campaigns have a viable way to be done, I'd do that simply for the asking

Except I don't usually like to spend more than 2-3 hours per day texturing. I find texturing incredibly boring and arduous and I hate it, and thus procrastinate heavily, and also thus refuse to help anybody out because I don't even want to texture my OWN shit, let alone theirs.
