The community itself has no features because the community is not a mod or game, yet they regularly throw boulders down the hill.

Once again you are limited because your cocnept of a mod is confined inside a zip file and youd o not realize that there are things like forums, websites, media, user opinion, other content even.

Best place for info atm is to do /join #evolution in the lobby client... Real website coming soon....

AF wrote:CA is climbing a hill and along that hill there are stable ledges that it can reach. Most mods slide down the hill after an initial momentum and land in the gutter and spent their lifetime rawling back up. BA sits at the top of the hill.

At some point CA may reach the final ledge at which point it will either share BAs position in a 50/50 or it'll keep on moving forward, pushing BA down the other side of the hill in the process.

As of yet BA has not let loose any boulders down the hill to stop CA.
Excellent analogy I must say :)

As a side note, many content creators, for example smoth are itnerested in setting up their own adjacent hills so they neednt compete for king of the hill status with CA/BA.

I would be happiest if the result of all this is not CA taking over BA's dominant position, but that it opens people up to playing many different mods on the engine. This is an engine for RTS games, not a breeding ground for a single dominant mod that can be marketed as 'The Spring'. Yes, it may indeed be the case that BA, CA and XTA are, essentially, 'The Spring' because there is no other games in town. But that shouldnt be the objective of a project such as this.

CA has a comfortable position, with team games and 1v1's going on most of the time, and a steady 13-16% of the market (Its been like this for weeks, or months).
http://tracker.caspring.org/stats/view.php

Hopefully, with the new stable commit pattern which means we only release once a week or so, people will start getting the mod from regular filehosts and we'll get even more players (those who were adverse to the downloader, as great as the downloader is).

Yes, we hope that eventually CA could be Springs 'Flagship Mod', being Atari-IP free yet complex and familiar enough to promote it to the outside community, something Spring needs badly. But while BA has kept spring alive (Without AA, BA and XTA we just wouldnt have all these players) this virtual monopoly is not something that i personally see as desirable.

In the end though, people will play the game that they find the most enjoyable. Yes, there are marketing efforts that need to be done to get a game over its initial hurdles and give it a self-sustaining community but in the end its about having a fun product. Therefore our main hope is just to have a fun game that people want to play.

Our playerbase is not large enough to support your ideal situation, it never has been and unless change occurs it never will be. If anything our playerbase has slowly shrunk over the last year.

Trim off the rough edges (nice website, nice lobby, extended hardware support, brief single player tutorial mission or two)...

Then, with a bit of positive recruiting (I'd be happy to actually contribute here rather than just randomly blathering from a position of ignorance as I do about most things) I think the player base could be boosted quite significantly in a short time.

That playerbase you see is pretty much the BA userbase. A mod would have to draw people who are not already loyal to BA in and that would grow the community.

Give spring an army of devs working on it fulltime and you got it.

I know. I just like to fantasise.

But to be fair, I've noticed most of the things I mentioned are being done by someone right now.

I'm loving that there are finally enough CA autohosts. It's been helping too - CA has been steadily climbing out of the 10%'s and closer to the 20%'s.

Headed for disaster. My gut tells me that CA is the wrong path to take. I've played the mod and it's ok, but it plays so much like BA I see no reason to switch over, with exception to the fact that most veteran players I know have chosen to play it instead of BA at all.

People will choose one, not both. Alot of people have comfort zones, my opinion is that most players are afraid of CA so they will never join. Vice versa, and this situation we are currently in will not change.

As I recall the change from AA to BA was almost instantaneous, a version change really. And why should people change? I played CA a couple times and it was ok. BA works fine, what else can you say. There is no compelling reason to play it.

What it's done is segregated the community into older players who have such a tight nit little community that they just get together and play a game of CA. Autohosts hosting BA and such don't attract vets of note as they used to, because vets get used to CA and stick to it.

The only ones that come out are the ones who play so much they get bored of both.

So what happens is CA games are so few and far between and have had the roughly same numbers as when they started, so why get into CA when you can never find a game. So you play BA, and the vets all leave lobby.

Meh, the less vet you are the less you're even going to see any differences. If you don't see any you can just switch to whichever has a game open ATM.

If you enjoy playing BA, and CA is so similar, then why would it becoming the main mod be the wrong path, or a 'disaster'? To you, it is surely just inconsequential, as you cannot tell the difference.

And as a player, especially as a skilled player, id see having a playerbase of a higher skill level as an advantage. BA's loss, sure, but CA's gain.
