It is off course in physics impossible that land unit's or ships wreckages just stop! It would be good that Land units and Ships give their last speed to the wreckages, so that Ship wreckages would sink while still moving and land units that are blown in the air and made wreckages fall down normally(as they were flying alive) not just stop in the air and slowly fall down along the Z axis(this is more like a bug)!
Though there would be a problem to code what happens if moving wreckage collides with another obstacle. It could bounce against it!

But what's with wreckages falling as if they are falling through water? When a commander (BA) dies on soft terrain you see his wreckage slowly float to the now lower ground level. It looks ridiculous.

Im pretty sure you could last version and someone changed it

If we could remove Wrecks and replace them with Units, we could do a lot of things, like pass the last game-state to them (velocity, angle, position), and have an animation that made it so that they could go from moving to stopped in ways that made sense visually. Among other things.
When aircraft get destroyed, they sometimes go into a spin and fall towards the ground. If you could have that for ships, maybe it would look like they are capsizing and slowly sinking.....
There's nothing that says you can't do it using separate wreck units tough. Then you get to change the model/texture to go with the death animations and stuff.
