Just had my second game of Supreme Commander online. First one was... unspeakable. This one was a little better though.
SupCom has a number of unfortunate balance flaws, but so far everything I've seen can be fixed through very simple modding. Simple modding, made simpler by the fact there's almost no units compared to what I'm used to!
Anyways, if anyone wants a watch, the ending had me screaming because I managed to catch this guy completely unprepared for the mode of attack I had planned.
The video highlights:
-Air power is very important, and difficult to defend against. Your best means of defense is to destroy the scouts so they are forced to bomb blindly or else spend excessively to scout you out. A fighter screen helps a lot as well, obviously. This is the first game I've played where it's mandatory to actually have an air force in order to effectively fight an air force - as it should be, realistically.
-Out teching your opponent doesn't assure victory. My opponent here was massing a deadly group of (guesstimate: 30?) T3 assault bots, but I managed a victory with only about 25 T2 heavy tanks, by avoiding a head-on confrontation.
-Transports are... godly. This game... it gets air transportation right. Spring has the potential to do the same, but it's still so refreshing after playing so many RTSs where transporting units is more trouble than it's worth.
-My opponent would've rendered my attack useless with just 2 or 3 AA guns in the right place, but he instead relied upon being somewhere I didn't expect.
-Although it didn't really have time to show in the replay, I used a similar tactic to allow me to build up my air transports somewhere he'd not look. This is only possible because the maps are so large.
Anyways. If you'd like to see one n00b stomping another n00b (the matchmaking system automatically gives you similar-experience opponents), just jump on GPGNet and search for "Caydr" in the replay vault. It's Caydr vs. Trip_Braile on Fields of Isis."
Does anyone else have some replays they'd like to share?

How can you tell if there are balance flaws after having played all of two games?Caydr wrote:Just had my second game of Supreme Commander online. ...
