Spring and community size

Post by MrAstrup »

I am for the minispring version and voted yes.

But I really think that it is important that a decision is made on this and both spring and minispring should not co-exist in a release right now.

My argumentation is quite simple: Our community is still very small and I believe it will suffer from two versions right now. The same logic applies to mods that changes the game a lot. Different interests is postive and drives the development, but too many directions at this early stage could be a bad thing.

Yes, this has been brought up on a number of occasions.

10053r, can you put in your first post in rather large letters something along the lines of:

"Minispring intends to completely replace the original Spring scale. The old Spring scale would no longer exist. There cannot be two different scaled versions of Spring floating around."

there are about 11 pages of minispring discussion on the forum atm, but i havent seen any feedback from sy... have they said anything about this at all?
i have been doing some thinking about this... and compiled a basic list of pros for minispring:

-realistic unit sizes in comparison to trees/lakes/seas/hills/moutains
-more realistic speed for certain units (ie. peewee, ak, weasel and so forth)
-increased map size compared to normal spring
-reduced map file size for compared to maps in normal spring
-possibility for trees/other features to be utilised for strategies, rather than being a roadblock
-ability to view more units and more of battles than in normal spring

about the only argument we seem to be getting is that there should be two options for spring, mini and normal. why? it has been explained many times before. this would be mayhem for mapmakers, and create too much variability which (imo) wouldnt enhance gameplay at all.
also people complain about not being able to rush, which i can understand (although i dont like being on the recieving end of it  ) but making all units of the same size, instead of having both a mini and normal spring would mean this wouldnt be an issue. universal unit sizes would mean that small maps would be produced just like before, and old ones can be reduced down to normal scale.

please. if you are going to write anything at all against minispring after this please dont make it about this stuff... im so sick of reading it...

I myself is a litthe annoyed that one of the plus sides is that u are zoomed out and can see more of the battlefield.

Cant you do so alredy? (for those whit a middle mouse button i mean:/)
One reson that minispring can be relesed is that u can zoom in, so that you have the ''normal'' camera. Why should then '' You se more units/battles'' or ''Gives you a better overwiew'' be called a pro?(pro as in pro/con-.-*)? When u alredy can zoom out or, even better, use the total war camera to se more of the battles?

Plz stop using that '' u are zoomed out'' as a good thing.

(oh, and atlanti, how do you know that the TA robots arent taller then the trees? Banans sure, but maybe a pewee are 50 meters hig( less/more))
(And i still want that zoom buttons :/)

"zoom" or camera is irrelevant!!

Minispring should be called OTASpring as it uses the EXACT SAME SCALE as OTA. Spring Doubled the sizes, I mearly brought them back to what they would be in a fully 3d world.

Now a 32x32 map is REALLY a 32x32 map, whereas with Original Spring it was a 16x16 map given the scale.

SY has been too quiet for a week, and it's starting to etch on my nerves. For a group who's driven by the community, or at least claims to be working with the community, they sure are vacant. No posts, no CVS updates, no word at all.

Don't bother PMing them either. I PM'd SJ over a week ago and never heard back.

OMFG JUST LEAVE WONDERFUL SPRING ALONE!!! If you want to play Minispring NOTHING IS STOPPING YOU.
This thread is like the old force everyone to play OTA thread please lock this thread SY's and don't listen to this bull shit

1) Vacations exist. Let's not think they abandoned us until more time has passed.

2) While SY is the Linus of our little world, we have the source code. We have the power. Spring will go on without them if they do abandon it. The only thing we'd need was a server, and I can provide that if need be.

Even if i hate to say it, your still wrong.

if 20% leaves, it's still 80%left. Thats like a half glass of milk, and then saying that the milk is emety. (isent suposed to make sense)

Minispring Makes the units smaller, which makes the maps larger. THATS IT. nothing more to it. The maps are ''bigger''. The filesize isent much smaller. And many plp like the scale.. so just go whit the flow...

OR! if u dont, why not make a mod called BIG/GIANT spring? Just like minispring mod, just it takes it back to the normal unit sizes.

(give me a way to zoom! PLZ)

Okay, minispring may be buggy in some points (Dint play it much).

But if imlpented in the game it would be fixed! Right now it's just a fast made mod made in 2-3 days! Make all values half of what they are now and volia! done and done.

So no, forget thats it's buggy. Forget evrything. Okay, imange TA:S, now imange the units shrinking to half their sizes.

Those it look good? Looks strange? Works good?

Probaly yes to evrything. or at least 37/44 think so.

How is minispring buggy? It's IDENTICAL to Spring in 99.9% of the code.

A bug in Spring = a bug in MiniSpring.

Can we just have a scale slider - 50%, 75%, 100%? Make 100% the default for now, but later, if miniSpring turns out to be the communities favourite, make it the default?

83% say it already is their favourite. :P

Gnome, I appreciate your cander, but please keep the language as best we can, with the traffic this site (may) see, I'd rather not have ppl thinking it's a "bad" place.

:-)

I have a feeling Doomweaver is < 15 anyway which is usually the root of all issues with him/her.

If 83% say it's their favorite, then why not shrink all of the units 83% of the way to MiniSpring size? That would mean having our units at 59% the usual size... :P
