No idea, not having any troubles on 2k. You can run the DOS exe with VDMSound though.
I also recall 2 RTS games i haven't seen since the demos and can't remember their names. In one you have the space and planets scattered in this huge environment. On planets you had space to build factories and stuff, resembles Galactic Civilizations(i haven't tried it) alltough the old demo had better graphics Shocked .
Ascendancy? Have my copy somewhere around here...
The Otherone was based on sectors with jumpgates between them. Every sector was a solar system and everything you built in the game was in a orbiting ring around the planet. You could mine asteroids do a lot of things. Twas pretty cool too bad i can' tfind it again Crying or Very sad
Off-World Resource Base (O.R.B.) or Hegemonia? Both are rather pretty for the low specs they require.

So, any game suggestions for those games you can't remember, right?

GalCiv 2 is getting a lot of attention lately. I'm not sure if it's the same genre but Space Rangers 2 got good reviews as well.

Space Rangers and Gal Civ 2 are so very different it's funny. One is a free form space RPG, like EV: Nova, while the other is Civilization 4...in SPACE without Lenard Nemoy...

Okay, what do GalCiv2 and Birth of the Federation have in common? The non existing tactical combat. It's like watching the strategic (simulated) battles in MoO2.

Other than that the game's pretty cool (GalCiv2), despite me having serious graphical issues thanks to no DX8 or 9 feature support.
edit: Uh right. There's a tool to emulate missing OpenGL or DX features through null rendering which fixed the borked textures for me.

Space Rangers 1 and 2 are pretty much identical while SR2 got more minigames and a lot of more features. Speaking of the minigames, the RTS "minigame" regularly makes me crash and so does the other mini game (it's a bit like a sidescroller meets asteroid). And THAT is annoying because they consume time.
You aren't forced to do either but the reward is pretty good so I take my chance. It's a bit like Diablo meets Freelancer in 2D. There's no real story line and you do either trade most of the time or do silly transporation jobs. There are more (random) jobs available but some aren't rewarding.

The best example are the "annihilate person x" quests. First of all you have to use the local search computer (for a fee of 3 creds a search :P) to look the ship name up, then travel to the system. Sometimes your target moved to another system and you have to do the same again. If you finally track your target down you'll have to kill it in one strike. If you fail and it manages to land it will repair because your target is actually an AI player just like you who earns money through trades or from raiding poor transports if it's a pirate. This means you'll have to shoot him down again and again until his money is all gone. This can be sped up by squeezing money out of him though.
Anyway the worst case is that he either escapes because his ship is faster than yours or, when it's a pirate or corsair, he gets put in prison. That's one lost mission and you'll lose influence on that planet. Bad influence means you'll have to bribe the government with a good sum or you can't do more missions there or trade in equipment or goods. At worst they'll launch their battle ships against you... this happened to me once. :(

But despite that it's a fun game... in the end you'll be killing those evil robots all the time and sell their parts. And you don't do that alone, other rangers often come for support. Right now I'm able to sweep systems alone and those pesky rangers then jump in after I've done the dirty work and steal the parts the robots dropped... shooting them in the back is fun I have to admit.

Woo!

The Space Empires forums at Shrapnel Games were the first forum I ever registered on, and I stayed there for a coupla years. :) But, as SEV neared, action died down a little, and I drifted away. But I'd already come across SOTS by then, and I'd already registered on their forums, so that became my hideout. :) (Was the first non-dev to sign up there btw. :) ) Then, I kinda drifted away from that too. But my heart still lies with these two 4X franchises. :) (Yes I know that SOTS is just one game as of now, but trust me, it'll be a franchise soon enough :) ) I love both SEIV's micromanagement (and modding possibilities :) *drools*..... man, the game's core files are in .txt and .bmp format, what else could you want? :D ) and SOTS's macromanagement and combat system.

So, if anyone dares to say negative things about either of these two games, don't be surprised if a Siege Driver Dreadnought and a Planetary Napalm Baseship come calling at your door.....

MoO2 combat, as usual. All games fail at that and thus they're only half as fun.

Well sword of the stars imo sucks.. Too simple, weird interface, not much depth involved and slow tactical battles with no tactics at all.
