Or to make it easier to remember use:

Or just point them to my site which will link to the latest version as they come out.

I was thinking a mod and map pack aimed at new players would be a very welcome item to the download list.
Basically something that is all set up in a zip file that you simply unzip into your spring directory and everything ends up in the right place.
To start us off I suggest the following.
Mods
* (AA) Absolute Annihilation 2.11 Full
* Expand and Exterminate v 0.163
* War Evolution 1.62
Maps
* Altored_Divide
* Brazillian_BattlefieldV2
* Castles
* Comet Catcher Remake-v02
* GreenCometV3
* Green_Fields
* Small Supreme Battlefield
* SpeedMetal
* SpeedMetalDuo v2
* Supreme Battlefield
* XantheTerra_v4
I have added the list to my spring page:
http://sardines.co.nz/spring/
If you wish to add/suggest something please provide links! This is very important as I can not add something if I do not know where to find it.
Remeber every added map adds to the total download size. I am thining about leaving out Supreme Battlefield to save on 50MB.

Castles, Green_Fields, SpeedMetal, SpeedMetalDuo v2 are all commonly held to be utterly shameful examples of spring mapping. Altored divide while good is horrendouly overplayed. There is no reason to have duplicates, GreenCometV3 + Comet Catcher Remake-v02 and Small Supreme Battlefield + Supreme Battlefield.
Maplist == FAIL.
Mod list is a start but abismally short.

Suggestions? Links?Hellspawn wrote:You really don't need two SpeedMetals maps. Rather include some nice 1v1 one.
Remeber new players JOIN games they don't host them. What maps are being played the most?
Right now in the lobby I can see a game for "speedmetal" and "speedmetalduo v2". Ok so some of you may think speed metal isn't a real map and only losers play it but it really IS getting played all of the time and so is SMDuo.
It is ment to be short. I could include every mod but that would be difficult to maintain and oppressivly large to download. This is a beginners download pack, not a "every file you'll ever need" pack.Das Bruce wrote:Mod list is a start but abismally short.
In reality I should just include AA. XTA and AA account for about 80% of games played*. More than enough for beginners.

It might be getting played all the time, but that still doesnt mean its GOOD. People play it cause its easy to rush a krog, thats all. That isnt what the game should be about. Sure, some people enjoy it, but thats not how the mods are supposed to be played, we need the newbs to play the game like its ment to be played, they can join SM/GF players later if thats what they want to do.

I don't want this pack to be mapist... I want people to download it and then find they can join 75% of the games been hosted. It's like saying I refuse to sell you anything with too much sugar in it when you run a candy store!
If you think there should be something in the video about discourging people from playing SM and GF type maps then PLEASE make a suggestion in the video thread.

Posted in the other thread as per goggles suggestion.Maelstrom wrote:There should be a note about Speedmetal in the video. It should tell people what this map is, and how it differs from a 'normal' map, and suggest to people to at least TRY other maps before trying SM, as the SM maps are not what mods take as the norm, therefore ruining the balance of said mods. It shouldnt say 'ZOMG DONT PLYA SPEDEMTAEL TI SUXORZ!!!1!11!!', but just tell people that other maps do exist, and are taken as better maps by the majority of the community.
Include Speedmetal. Pepole are WAY overeacting about it. Speedmetal is about.... 25-20% of the games played in spring, not 70% like most think.
Just include a Readme with some guidelines. "Speedmetal makes for fast and mostly mindless gameplay. Thou new players seem to enjoy the simplefied slugfeasts, it is shunned by the large base of "Pro" players. It's kinda of a love it/hate it map." or something.

Additional maps to include (based on # of downloads, filesize, and quality of gameplay IMO):
MoonQX (of course
)
Greenhaven
TheColdPlace
RiverDale
CooperHill
Crossing_4_final
CoastToCoast
FrozenGauntlet
LowlandCrossing
GeyserPlains
If you eliminate the 50MB supreme battlefield (not small) you could probably fit all these maps into that space. I'm sure there are others that I have missed.
Maps not to inlude:
Porc maps or maps non-standard resource distributions. If you must include a "speed" map, speed comet would be a good choice. This is an opportunity to encourage new players to pick up the game the right way, rather than just playing speed maps, getting bored quickly, and leaving.[/url]

include some AI:s, installed in the right way. Ones that work with current spring. They're not big. And then SpringSP latest version too, it works like a charm. Someone who knows the current status of all AI:s can post here, I don't and don't wanna get flamed, as I don't know where they all stand, I just use some.
If I add AIs then I have to explain them in the video :)bamb wrote:include some AI:s, installed in the right way. Ones that work with current spring. They're not big. New players don't NEED the extra AIs to start playing. It is probable better in some ways that they get a couple of games under their belt before they have to try and understand them all.
I though about adding SpringSP for a long time as I use it all the time and it is nicer to use than the lobby for singleplayer games. I decided not to include it as you don't NEED it to play single player (the lobby is good enough) and it would then become another whole interface new players would have to learn.
