Scrolling Maps

Post by PicassoCT »

Just imagine a Colum - with Landscape upon it, slowly (very slowly Turning) and forcing you to remain in constant Movement like a Nomad - or get crushed on the DownBorder of the Scrolling Map.

Wow... I was expecting a MTR, but this is a truely new idea... absolutely insane and requiring the creation of a custom mod for it's use... not saying it's bad... not sure what I think of it yet.

Not neccesarily. It would just make expansion much more important and porcing almost useless. With a map like this: Porcing = death within 5 minutes. But it could probably work with any mod. It would just switch the balance to perpetual level 1 raiding combat.

Damn, reminds me of the horseclans lol, anyhow this is a great idea, move or get squashed to death, what if some units are too slow?

like a commander maybe?

Well, I don't think it would move that fast...

It would really increase the importance of air transports.

I believe that this is another instance of "Thats so crazy it might just work".
That would be so cool, imagine using high pushforce weapons in it...

Imagine the utter inability of all mods but nano blobs to function on this sort of map, then imagine that the charm wears off fast as you realize that your entire base could be pwned by you not remember to issue a move command cause something is happening, then imagine the terrain is formed into a wall along one part preventing you from moving fast enough to get out of the way and thus getting pwned..

And air units for the????!1

Well it would be great for nanoblobs...

But those are good points that I failed to see... this might need its own mod, and I think maps should work for as many mods as possible.

Obviously the map would have to be designed for scrolling, I wouldn't imagine, say, scrolling Speedmetal would work very well ;-)

I could see AA working on this with slightly reduced lab costs and buildtimes. Especially the Action variant, so your resource collection doesn't get pwned every couple minutes.

I'd love to see this with a Nomads of the Far East mod! Mongol horsemen FTW. As long as the "rape and pillage" option is there.

a bizarre idea, maybe a bit of a novelty, but not worth the effort, or even worth the time needed to even think about it.

A similiar, maybe easier to implet idea might be to just have some asteroid-showers go down on the map.
There might be a warning on the minimap. Forces you to move.
Or how hard would it be to have raising water?

I remembered the metior showers of OTA.

I also think a map that targets your most expensive building and destroys it with a nicely placed asteroid strike would be fun.

Oh wait...I could just play Outpost 2. This idea sounds almost exactly the way FizzWizz said, but I think if someone made it I would play it. So go ahead.

I get tired of this crap. This would suck in soo many ways. Look, spring is not about making abstract art or anything it is a RTS engine.

*sighs*

picasso, I can understand you want more possibilities but the devs have said that ANY kind of scrolling map would require massive engine rewrites. Also this would not have a positive affect on gameplay. The idiots that comprise 90% of the AA fanbase cannot handle other mod because they are too hard too learn. Do you think those same idiots will be able to play something like this?

Furthermore, not that you actually listen to me but I will repeat this for the nth time. Noone plays your maps because they are not looking for novelty maps, they are not looking for cubism, expressionism or sureality. They are looking for a somewhat symetrical map with a good layout that promotes fun gameplay.... most of the time for AA. Not tables with cookies on them etc.

You know what, never mind.. do what you want. You will reguardless of feedback but I am telling you that outside of a couple of idiots who rejoice over ideas like this and MAYBE play 1 match on them, the rest of us will roll our eyes and move on. You obviously have tallent yet you waste it on crap. Why!??!

There was a TBS called Terra, Inc. that had that mechanic. Of course your base was mounted on a huge moving platform...

Morbus Xeno had a symmetrical Layout - Nostradomus had and i gave precise warnings about those Maps who are ExperiMental. Call it ConceptMaps- and some of the Ideas are interesting. Just nobody ever replys to them.

1. Oran Uteros: The only Metall on the Bottom of Acid Lakes, forcing the Players to build Hovercrafts (who are the only units able building into acid Metallextractors) - and avoid Amphibious & Ships. There were "Two" Maps out the Same time, were "More Hovercrafts" were asked, and begged. Nobody replyd.

2. Oberon Etoreth: Same thing, this time enforcing Aircrafts to build Extractors in great Depths on Land. Again, no reply, and no further Use. It is one thing to talk about Graphics & how i waste them. It is another to waste (even in natural, symetrical Maps) usefull Ideas.

2a. OSoleDiod:
Idea of Rebuildable Bridges, forcing new tactics. Not heard and seen in any Map since Release.

4. RatRace/Speedrnetall:
Took no Talent, took no Time, just a hour for each one - so there is nothing wasted at all.

I don`t see why you feel personally attacked by me doing my Way of Mapping. I don`t do this to make a laugh out of Spring. I do this to test how far this thing can go, were the borders are. It might not be usefull today, but who knows what you want to do next week, next month, next year. And i really try to avoid those things (buildingsMaps) you hate to see. But i wont give up on Ideas who get stuck in my head, even if it rotates my own eyes. You don`t have to download it, you don`t even have to notice it. And you are free to write additions to the Disclaimer...

Concerning the Scroll Column -

It is - a Idea, an Invitation - and if noone of the Developers likes it, that`s all there is. If you look closer, i made already some suggestions, who vannished into the paper bin, some even I regard as a horrible wast of Time now. So, let us all calm down and burry this Thread. It is still a Game... or ?

And to make the Idea easyier to accept- yeah why not make this as a visible - slowly moving weather Phenomena, a Sandstorm, Hurrican (Column-shaped 8) ) or Chronsperestorm.... It would be just another SMD Option - and nobody hear is going to tell me, that the Spring Engine can`t creat such a Effect.... Imagine Electrostatic Overcharge when a Sandstorm roars against a Shield.... That would look Good on my ... or even better on Smooths Map.

I am not attacking anything, I am saying that your maps are not getting played for a reason. Right now you and genblood are even on the amount of maps people play. This should not be. I keep saying it, you have the talent, if you would just hear us.

The scrolling thing will of course never be implemented because the devs have better things to do, but I honestly think that I would play a good quarter of my games on such a map. Using XTA.

As long as it didn't scroll too fast. Maybe 1 map unit every minute or something.
