Hi as topic states, how do we gain ranks?

Currently it's ingame time. For example: 0-5 hours ingame gives you private rank, whereas 100 (i think, been a long time) hours gives you a star/general rank. However, there is a lot of talk regarding an overhaul of the ranking system to better reflect skill levels.

There are plans for a new ranking system based on skill, but as far as I know nothing will change for less-than-star ranked players.

Skill-based ranking would just lead to rank whoring.

couldn't agree more. as flawed as this system is, in a rank based system a few good players and a whole lot of jerks would have high ranks, which still wouldn't be an indication of skill but will open up a whole lot of other cans of crap.

Also skill based rankings might make people afraid to try new mods because they'd probably lose at first and ruin their record.

Any skill-based ranking (or even any other type) should DEFINITELY be mod-based, considering their diversity in gameplay.

I wholly agree it should be based on rank, with star rankings you have too many speedmetal noobs as stars. If they broke up the rank system properly so it reported the truth about how a player plays, ex. average resource output or kill rating & GAME TIME such information could hold more value when balancing a team.

I would definitely like some sort of game style ranking... ie where other people vote how much you were a porcer.

Whats wrong with porcing? Winning by porcing seems to me as valid as any other tactic.

wining by porcing equals the other player gets bored and quits... othewise you are winning by playing defensive

Skill based ranks leads to stupid games where people only tries to win... it becomes too serious... i saw that in Red Alert 2 :|

Oh, and it also leads to disconnecting... when you are losing, you just pull your internet cable off, and you dont get +1 to loses... seen that A LOT in RA2, lol...
