can i get permission to advertise spring?

Post by jj »

as a test, i want to rent advertisement space at http://games.startpagina.nl for TA spring.
they have 175.000 dutch visitors every month.

Idea:
if it works and the costs are not too much, then we could finance it with donations.

Since you want to ignore the thread...

the devs are WORKING on fixing the desync problem that DRIVES PLAYERS AWAY. It would be a bit early to try and advertise.

its a free game, i know there are a lot of people out there, wanting to accept a few bugs when they can keep their money in their pockets.

Yes, but the devs are actively working on the biggest problem with spring, so why not wait the couple months for them to finish it so we can actually keep the players we attract?

Doesn't CC:Generals desync too sometime? I wonder if people are actually being driven away. There seems to be a small percentage of the people that have hardware that desyncs frequently for some weird reason. They will be driven away yes, but 90% will stay if they like the game.

I agree. Spring is just about ready for prime-time now.

I agree. Advertising the game while desyncing is still existent will only be counter productive. It would be best to wait for the problem to be fixed then we should try and expand the community.
Can we call the engine "beta" when the desync issue is fixed?

JJ, I am also working on an advertisement scheme. If you would like to go ahead, I will go on which my plans when the desync is fixed.

The problem is that Spring desyncs orders of magnitude more often than CCG.

I'd say that desyncs happen in more than 1 out of 10 games I host or play in.

As of now I'd say that Spring is still too "beta" for widespread advertising.

Also, I'm not sure we have the community framework to handle large numbers of players - inconsistent lobby moderation, autobans for innocent ignorant people with no immediately obvious way to appeal, very limited options for filtering/finding games, etc.

Advertisement soon will gather interest in the next beta. If JC's new UpSpring works as amazingly well as it promises to, I and others will have some very spiffy content to show off. I have confidence that Tobi will get desync under control. Advertisement is something that has to be done for awhile, though, to build audience.

when spring gets ready for advertising I will definitely do what I can on my end to support it and some of its mods but at the moment... IF I cannot tell people at my weekly lan that spring is ready then like hell I am going to tell the internets.

I think the power of spring is in the portability of the engine, which no mod has taken advantage of yet. I'm not saying the current mods are garbage, it's that I think that the spring engine could do a lot more than rts's.
Has anyone seen savage for example? Of course the engine is still too much in it's infancy to do anything like that, but we do have proof of concepts, such as the first person mode.
I don't think we willl see more and cooler mods unless if the community grows, and I don't think spring has much to offer.
The engine and it's mods won't will stir much attention unless we can prove, through the advertising, that the engine, it's mods, and its modability (yes I made that word up :-) ) are kick ass
So what I'm trying to say is: If your going to advertise it, please don't fuck up.

See Com Shooter for what happens when you try to expand Spring beyond RTS.

There's a reason that MechaSonic is the only one who like it.

Spring can barely do more mods than OTA, it's not really a flexible engine.

spring is passing its prime graphically, every year its visuals get less impressive and visuals are what about 50% of gamers care about.
