Expand and Exterminate Maplist

Post by pktm »

Hello!

May we put together a list of maps that are recommended for E&E?
It would be a lot easier for new players if they would habe some hints how to start best with this great mod.

Maybe we release an installer, which contains some of those maps.

i like those (1v1 because quite small)

imo was much better when URC could still get up the cliffs:
http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/18 ... n-v01.sd7/

roads and hills n stuff:
http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/13 ... g-v03.sdz/

this one is fun:
http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/12 ... hills-v08/

not tried right yet:
http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/22 ... _Map_Pack/

http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/15 ... cs-V2.sd7/

desert with some crater-thingys:
http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/1613/Aavikko_V2/

bit too flat:
http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/20 ... e_classic/

i wanted to post more but my posting got lost when i closed some window :/

Imo most current spring maps are not really suited for E&E
(in the ee thread Fanger also said why)

The world will hate this:
broodwar maps, if remade correctly would be 100% cool for EE i think:
look at this classic map for example:
http://www.battle.net/images/battle/scc/lp/4/xlt.jpg (Lost Temple)
in most starcraft maps you:
-startpos with some minerals (imagine minerals = 2 to 4 metal patches)
and enough room for your first base.
-the starpos often only has one entrance or ramp but is still reachable by drops
-near the start is your so-called "natural expansion." On Lost Temple there is a cliff behind the minerals where the enemy can drop arty and kill your stuff. (siege tanks for Terran or PSI storms with Protoss) I imagine this would work out quite well in E&E too.
-The 2nd mineral patch is more towards the middle, more open and harder to defend. (But lategame one expansion will not be enough)
-Also notice the "fly-only" expansions in the corners.
-expanding too early can backfire if you can't defend it. (of course that can happen on spring's map too, but it is different if your next metalspot is 1/4 a screen away or way outside your base) This makes players expand with thought and you do not even have to put "all metal in the middle"

On maps like http://www.battle.net/images/battle/scc/LP/bw04/xse.jpg
you can also "expand around your enemy." On most spring maps players just expand towards each other until a frontline is created.

This looks like a good start but of course is much too small:
http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/15 ... tlet_Ver2/

Other maps that might be good as remakes:

archers valley
severnaya industrial complex
industrial mountain
tournament desert (havent tried it, gd may have trouble with the hills)
crossing 4 final

If Forb made it, chances are it will be pretty balanced for EE, if not designed with that mod in mind

There was a half finished 8 player FFA EE map that I really liked Decimator was working on. I think it was called dessicated sinkhole b1. I cannot find the beta on unknown, probably removed. Anyone known if he finished it? If he did it would be a great addition.

Hills and valleys is another favorite of mine for EE.

I'm actually going to request an 8v8 map, if you can believe it, for nefarious purposes.

dessicated sinkhole: ("where the animals come to drink the raptors come too" or something)
I still have this i think, but it looks unfinished (everywhere the same terrain)

tournament desert:
works for GD, is fun to play but of course different because of the small size.

giant hills and valleys seems to be popular too.

Dessicated sinkhole had a hell of a lot of potential, but it seems like deci just kinda lost interest.

More like my l3dt liscence decided to quit working and I haven't had the ambition to start digging in the registry. If you'd like to take a crack at it, I'd be more than happy to send you the heightmap, Forb.

Ok, now that we have some maps, we should put together some information about them (e.g. how many players you can use on the map) and put the list to the local E&E wiki-page, shouldn't we?

Gundam could use a list like that too, I often wonder which map I should pick when hosting.
