Lathan's swamp map.

Post by Dragon45 »

Few questions

1) What was bad about this map/map type?
2) We all know what was good about it - it was rich, vibrant, and genuinely awesome to play in. Plus it made for some great screenies for Nanoblobz ;). Best looking spring map ever IMHO.
3) Why are there not more maps like this? Another four or five (especially small 10x10s in this style, possibly on different worlds) would raise the bar for mapmaknig not just for Spring, but for all RTSs everywhere. And I mean that sincerely.

1. The amount of effort it required to produce.
3. The amount of effort it would take to produce.

I seriously want maps like this for all sizes and number of players.

Did you ever actually try to play it? The features got in the way of seeing your units.

Because most map makers are not feature makers of the caliber of lathian.

Nobody actually plays it anyway, they just complain about it lagging.

-placing hundreds upon hundreds of features is very tedious

-making and skinning tons of models takes a long time

But it IS a very pretty map. And my computer can barely run SupCom but you don't see that stopping me!

I don't know why more people don't play this map. As Argh has patiently taught us what's important about maps is not how they play, but how they look.

I can see the point here, but honestly, lathan is very busy and having me whining in his ear asking for features is a total pain in the ass I would imagine.

He tried pretty hard to get me to make a swamp map at the same time using the same features, but honestly, when it comes to placing features, you really don't get much better than lathan, and this was an omgwtfpwn kick ass map, so I doubted that I could makes something even close to that much awesome.

Meh I still could, but I'm kinda scared of placing that many features, and actually trying to make it look good...

Personally, the only reason I don't play the map is because I get an awful frame rate on it. It's extremely frustrating to play when Spring is running that slow; mouse responsiveness is very high on my priority list.

Also... I think I'm right in saying that teh transparacy does not work on all machines? Atleast I had some one tell me my tree was weird cause it had huge square leaves, when actully they were jsut big faces with branches on them... Anyway, that would stop anyonw with that error playing that map, casue he uses loads of transparancy in that map!

he had to agorm... You have any idea how many polis that would have been? And yest, for transparancies to work, you must have reflective units turned on.

I know he had to. I wasn't blaming him, hell, I said I used the same trick. I think its a fantastic way of doing things, cause hell, thats how comercial games do it.
If I blame anything I blame the engin, cause you need reflective units on, when realy that should not be the case at all. Its just friggin daft, it should be on all the time. (however I know why, its cause there on the same texture, but come oin, it does sux big time. Some one should fix it.)

... if they did I could finaly make that tree map...
