The sad (and funny) story of a mod I used to play

Post by Peace »

Background info:
This mod (Strike Force) started on UT99 (Unreal Tournament) and the first version was released in about jan 2000 if my memory serves me correctly. It was/is sort of like a military shooter thing. Anyway I played this mod since then in several clans and so on...great fun and very nice community. Stopped playing about a year ago when I moved to another country (I'm in internet less hell now :P)

Today:
The mod switched platforms to UT2004 shortly after that was released. There was a lot of drama and the main project leader and "owner" of the mod totally abandoned it to pursue a commercial release. Now, the project leader (from here on Optimizer) always seemed to have a lot of "issues"..he had a bad rep in short...with just about anyone from publishers, Epic (makes of UT) to other mod creators.

Anyway, a community dev team tok over the mod (with the consent of Optimizer) and has now worked on the current release for over a year.
The community dev team was just about to wrap up their first release a few days ago when they found out that Optimizer was running a website which sells cheats for commercial games!
Naturally they didn't want anything to do with this so they all jumped ship and started up their own website with forums and stuff.

Optimizer then get's pissed off and makes a announcement on the original site that the new version is done. He releases an old internal beta that doesn├óÔé¼Ôäót work online and has tons of bugs and calls that SF 4.0

Optimizer then kills the original website/forums and blames that plus the cheat site thing on his son. The paypal account and e-mail however lead directly to him and his "company"...

A apocalyptic flame war now takes place on the dev teams new forums. The community is 100% on the dev teams side.

Optimizer then contacts the ISP which is hosting the community dev team├óÔé¼Ôäós new site and gets them to shut the site down with the motivation that the site has copyrighted material on it.

Dev teams site is now back up and they have reached an agreement (somehow) with Optimizer and will release the new version on the 17'th feb.

Now how is that for Dallas like intrigue for ya?? :P

Hehe, funny story. Ironically enough I take great pleasure out of the much internal and external drama surrounding the SourceForts (HL2 mod, use Google if you care) community. I think the initials SF are just a drama magnet TBH.
