New here, and a little lost
Hello,
I happen to come across Spring from Gamershell.com and it interested me so i downloaded it and was amazed at how amazing it was, but i have not played a full match, i just installed it and have been fooling around. But i downloaded a lot of mods but have not tried them out. I have to say i am quite impressed with the game and the mods. Is it completely user made? well enough of me talking, hello.
By the way what are some realy good mods/maps/Ai's?

Hi there.
The main played mods are BA/AA/XTA - which are all based on TA units. Then there's mods with original content like Gundam, Expand and Exterminate, etc.
http://spring.unknown-files.net/category/13/Maps/6/ will give you a good indication of map popularity, based on downloads. Don't get speedmetal though, it is evil. You basically join a game then download the map, there's not much in the way of map packs.
I have no idea about AI's.

I suggest browsing the mods forum and try out everything, then play what you like the most. Latest download links are usually in the first page of a mod's thread.
edit: Oh you did that already.
Anyway to give you a grasp of what is what...
TA:
XTA (comes with TA release)
Absolute Annihilation (outdated atm)
Balanced Annihilation (above but differently... balanced)
Basically OTA (BOTA)
Not OTA (NOTA)
TA Battlefleet
Non-TA:
Gundam
Nanoblobs (comes with GPL release)
Expand and Exterimnate (Earth 2150 like)
Final Frontier (space mod)
Eternal Struggle (ditto)
Dozers
GINTA
Fun mods:
Commander Shooter
War Evolution
...and a whole bunch of other incomplete mods I can't remember.
Can't tell you what's good or not. If you are into TA you might like BA 4.5. E&E 0.172 is also pretty good and good looking, same for Gundam which has a lot of eyecandy (unlike the TA mods which use 10 years old content). I suggest to try everything you can't get a game online out against AAI. And don't be put off by people telling you to get AA/BA and stick with it for the rest of your life... :P
As for the AIs check out the AI forum.
Good AIs uh... AAI is one of the few which is supposed to work with all mods (but Expand and Exterminate due to the new hub system) and it comes with either Spring release. You'll have to create configs for the mods though. This can be done by either taking an old config (i.e. the AA223 config should work with BA 4.5) and simply renaming it in some cases... it's not that difficult but takes some time.
On this matter I think it would be good if someone can keep these configs updated so newbies don't have to mess with that stuff.
There are some more such TSI and hughperkin's C# AI (forgot the name) but I think they were limited to TA based mods or something.
Then there's NTAI which hasn't had an update as of late... it should work with any mod I think as soon as AF hands out a new compile for the current Spring version.
Lastly there's KAI which works without much trouble with almost any mod, it's also quite challenging (uses maphack cheat).

There is no such thing as "regular Spring". Spring comes with XTA or Nanoblobz depending on the version you download but these aren't somehow preferred over other mods. Decoupling mods can happen (well, actually they just don't get coupled in first place) for reasons like the mod releasing new versions on a different schedule than Spring. The de-facto standard mod is BA but I think most if its players haven't tried other mods seriously so that shouldn't be taken as a value judgement.
