New Map - Caustic Park

Post by TheFatController »

This is my second attempt at a map, the first kind of sucked, but I like this one a bit more, it's based on the OTA acid tileset which was my favorite tileset back in the day...

I'd consider adding features to it but couldn't find any existing that were in theme with the map, other than that its 3v3 top v bottom with limited (but valuable) metal spots, 6 geothermals placed in semi-safe positions.

Have fun let me know what you think...

I'll add some more screens once I actually have a proper game on it with another human :o

Edit: Uploaded a newer version with minor tweaks, should be better now!

More Screenshots (note: only shows one dark purple team I was playing with .cheat) :)

It looks really dark.

Those OTA tilesets were great. Good to see someone is trying to do the same with Spring maps.

Only two things remain to be done: :o 1) Patch engine to allow animated features and 2) remake Gas Plant Plain!

I think its a bit lighter since that second shot was taken, however lighting is not daytime/midday earth its supposed to be a nasty alien world so... :)

I have gone over this many many times.

Over use of lighting makes unit and team differentiation difficult. It also makes telling your units apart from the environment more difficult. Not a good thing.

Nice map. You might want to add some player starting positions.

going by that screenshot, the map looks terrible. upon opening it up in-game, however, it's not dark, and it's not confusing for team colors at all.

it looks really, really good - the .smd settings have been meticulously chosen, and the texture is sexy. aesthetically i am impressed with this map, i think the author just needs to take some better screenshots.

gameplay, not so sure. i'd be worried that the terrain is too difficult to maneuver and build on, but that's just speculation. i'll add it to my list of maps i need to host a game on.

Did you use tiles from the OTA tileset to make this?

I figure the Tyranid Capaliary towers I made would work...

might just have to adjust the hue on them slightly, make them a tad "pale" and they would fit in well

If ever there was a map that should be SM3, not SMD, this is it. It'd look 100% sexier with a proper tilemap that wasn't distorted by terrain and a normalmap.
