Post by jackalope »

tunrs out some people think GLP is pretty important so you might want to look into including that with your mods.

Very few mods are actually capable of reaching legal status without requiring Atari to GPL TA and release it for free along with all its source materials.

Each mod can actually do that perfectly fine by making sure they remake everything - models, textures, scripts, sound, etc.

As I said in another thread tho they might still have IP/trademark issues, but I doubt that is resolvable at all (tho they might apply as fan art or something...)

because most TA moders cannot make textures models,or sounds. If they could they would make something like EE and then get ignored by 90% of the community.

Lets talk about the mods that make their own content:

They could do a mod based off of another universe like starwars or gundam.

Starwars is all but forgotten despite being very interesting it has a slow development speed and has been around for a long time! I am surprised lucas arts hasn't stopped the mod and I am happy they haven't!

Gundam is ignored because it is anime and therefore emo. Neither of which are played and before someone starts Gundam is safe, bandai has NEVER in the history of moding stopped a gundam mod. They for the most part don't give a flying fuck about it because it is nothing more then fan art. Which is fine by me!

Then there is nanoblobs which is more of an experimental mod. It has some really pretty effects and some unconventional gameplay/unit designs. If argh ever adds in a more standard resource system I'd play it for shits and giggles.

you also have 1944 which has been in development at a speed that most turtles can outrun! It is a "realistic" game which is something RTS guys should accept more then starwars, gundam or nanoblobs. However, spikehelmet makes a point of trolling which drives a lot of people away! Even worse is the fact that after all this time it still lacks complete functionality because many scripts are bugged to all hell. The team is working on it but it still is unplayable at the moment.

World Domination Disappeared and is getting poked at with a stick by maestro.

Heavy gear has all but stopped as far as we know.

Battletech has not had a release since at least last summer.

I am TIRED of reading about licenses. I am tired of hearing people bitch about the TA mods not getting retextured. I made my stuff, so did fang and argh. So yeah, there are mods with their own content.. made by 1 man teams no less.

GPL is purely designed to protect you from other people's GPLing.. its like a spyware program that goes after spyware...

some people are not taking this very seriously. This has been something that has affected our community quite a bit and requires serious discussion and attention in order to be taken care of properly.

:?

GPL is actually designed to protect your freedom and other peoples freedom to modify, build upon and redistribute your stuff.

I do take it seriously. You must be unaware of the reason for my temporary return. You players do not see all the mod discussion at all times.. start reading the past three pages of the forum you will see it has been a heated issue for over a month.

To put it bluntly GPL is not for every one.

It's been a little quicker of late, in some regards. Just because we aren't blowing our trumpet all the time doesn't mean we aren't doing things.
It is a "realistic" game which is something RTS guys should accept more then starwars, gundam or nanoblobs. However, spikehelmet makes a point of trolling which drives a lot of people away!
He has his own way, certainly. Though for the time being he isn't even actively working on it (a great shame, impo, though I can see why other people don't embrace him).
Even worse is the fact that after all this time it still lacks complete functionality...
Such as?

Have you played the recent string of public alphas? Have you played version 'h'? :| I find it quite playable; certainly enjoyable.

Not sure. I played the beta that had a patch mutator.

Not all guns would fire when ordered etc. I am sure you gents are aware of that stuff though. I'd have to stop and try it again. This thread isn't about that though. So lets not turn this into a mod discussion. That question would have been better sent via PM.

Many different builds have used a content/patch system... basically since Nemo started developing, and that was quite some time ago! :P

Perhaps, but then potential players would read your misinformation without any rebuttal.

ah, good point. I did not mean it as an insult though...

anyway.. Jack, you are a cool dude but trust me this issue has been discussed ad nauseum.

If I had the time I would make a GPL mod but my priorities are as follows

School
GF
Gundam
misc

I seldom get to misc
