Improved effects in AA, Balanced AA, etc?

Post by submarine »

So far nearly all discussions in the mod related threats had been about balancing issues and addition of new units. It seems to me that hardly anyone wants to improve/enhance/change all the effects. Apart from some mods like EE most mods more or less only use the default explosions.

I have no idea how easy to use and powerful the explosion generator really is but imho it would add to most mods a lot if they use nicer effects.

E.g. argh's nuke explosion seems to be very nice, why do most mods still keep the default one? (i assume there arent any license issues, if that's the case please corect me)

Well, gameplay comes first. Also, there seems to be some resistance to new content in the OTA-derivative mods because some people wish to keep near to the old roots.

Anyway, I've raised the issue on several fronts. There will be results, in modelling, animations, explosions, particle effects and sounds... it will simply take some time. You may want to check the KnoX forum, they're considering some improvements for XTA.

Only the TA based mods use the TA based explosions. Really though, i think most TA-based modders are more concerned with sorting out their gameplay than making more prettiers, or they probably wouldnt be using models from an 8 year old game...

There are also CPU issues. Argh's Nuke explosion lags my computer so much the first time it appears, to the point that by the time my computer catches up, the explosion is almost over. Of course the normal Com explosion does the same thing... but nevertheless.

i dont know much abou modding but isnt it possible that e.g. someone creates a really nice arty explosion (some more dirt flying away, perhaps a little "mushroom" - just look at some of those wwII movies) and other modders copy&paste that?

i guess it takes much time to create nice effects and i really understand that most modders want to improve/fix balance first

Noize has done a little work with improving the lasers in BA, but I don't know how much longer he will be able to keep developing it. :(

I also get myself laged with that nuke, not to that point but still lag.
