Politics: Can we ban it?

Post by KDR_11k »

There's no point in arguing politics, it just ends up in a flamewar and makes people hate each other over superficial reasons. Let's ban it.

Azu being banned wasn't because of political discussion, it was because of flaming. His format was: make extremely controversial post ("all gay people should be killed" for example), wait till people inevitably responded negatively, and then cry about them flaming him and demanding they should be banned. He was the worst flame baiter we've ever seen.

ACtaully. he made posts taht at first, looked like reasonable political discussions (Do you support bush? and Do you think gay people should be allowed to marry) and then crying about how people didn't take his pols seriously ("NO I HATE BUSH HE IS TRADING SOLDIERS FOR OIL!" and "NO I'M AN IDIOT AND THINK GAY POEPLE SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED SOMEHTING AS SACRED AS MARRAIGE")

I havent seen any excesses, it's all fairly polite, it'll die out if there really is no need. And if you dont want to read it, don't click it.

Discussions are fine. Sad thing is there aren't a lot of discussions on this board.

As a community we are so combative, I actually believe that the political discussions are lower energy than our usual ones, and they may be helping the cohesion of the community.

Somthing tells me thats because we all have one thing in commen... We all like a certain war game. Hence being combative is probablie in out blood.

Not so much. I see no correlation between enjoying a competitive game and the extreme amounts of immature argument and conflict inherent in this forum or the lobby chat client. If most of the discussions were about exploits, and people possibly cheating, I could see that - but they aren't. They range from partisan disrespect for the efforts of others all the way down to how people talk.

I've seen less combative FPS game forums... by that logic you're dealing with people who like murdering people. Frankly I'd blame the pseudo intellectual egotism of many of the people here. The average e-penis size for a member of this community is WAY larger then it should be.

It tugs my nuts how many arguments here come down to "OMG, HOW DARE YOU QUESTION ME, DO YOU KNOW HOW BIG A NAME I AM IN THIS COMMUNITY/ALL THE THINGS I'VE CONTRIBUTED?" You're just another random ock on the internet, and if you produce content only to garner respect then you don't deserve the respect anyways. IMO there is no level of importance where you still don't have to actually make intelligent arguments to be right and you are above intelligently considering the arguments that others make. Yet many people here seem to believe they are on that level still.

President Bush doesn't say "How dare you question me, I am president!"
But people on the internet do... How sad..

Edit: I think that Swift has a good point... I mod cuz I wanna have my infantry blowing my aliens to chunks... Not cuz I want any respect.. I live w/o much respect in real life, so I may as well live the same online, eh?

I do that all the time. Where it's appropriate to be uncivil that is.

Ive thought this for a long time swift but I could never think of a good way to put it across in a post. You couldnt have hit the nail harder or more squarley on the head with a 10 ton hammer.

Seeing as most members of the forum are not actually American, having 'discussions' about the American government is kinda pointless.

However, banning them completely isnt that great either, they are good for a laugh for us not involved.

+1 to locking political threads as soon as the flames start burning.

Hell its funny even if you ARE living in America. An opinion never hurt anyone...though they have motivated people to hurt other people. So, I suppose, you could say that indirectly an opinion could hurt somone...but not one on the internet.

I like it when Americans start having a political discussion, so I throw in my 2 cents because it's an international forum, and then they get all indignant like I'm trying to manipulate their destiny by having an opinion on their government.

The thing that gets me the most is how many weird imaginary rules Americans have about their political system. Like how everyone is supposed to vote, but no one is supposed to vote intelligently or change their opinion on their leaders at any point in time. You shouldn't talk with people from other countries about your politics because they may shift your opinion and cause you to have thoughts in your mind about the way your government works, and every good American knows the dangers of thinking.

Of course this doesn't apply to every American, but some are down right stupid about these things.

Good news for you SS...but that is only true for a small bit of America.
