Map variants

Post by imbaczek »

As in - map settings variants.

Some Quake mods have it, e.g. CPMA with /callvote map !mapname - the bang ("!") indicates that it's not a real map, just an item set which overrides the default items that normally exist on a map. I pondered for a while and thought that it would be a great addition to Spring - right now it's kind of hard to balance a map correctly to 1v1 and let's say 4v4 and by tweaking metal and/or wind values (or even metalmaps) in a variant, it would be possible to make a good 1v1 map which wouldn't suck in a 4v4 because of next-to-nil metal production :)

What was important in Quake is that the mapper doesn't need (or even know) that his map had an itemset. The same applies to Spring - a mapper could post a map and tests of different settings could be performed without any problem by third parties, which results in a new level of constructive feedback.
