DefCon
This game is BOSS!
It takes this idea: "You are the commander of a nations nuclear capabilities. It is DefCon 1 and your at nuclear war with each of your neighbors. Everyone is going to die. but can you loose LESS then the enemy?"
So you have to maneuver your fleets, place your silos and launch the B-52s. Can you manage to inflict more megadeaths (1 million or more casualties per megadeath) on the enemy. I played a game with my friend. I lost 30.4 million, and he lost 47.2 million. I won, but the entire West Cost had been reduced to radioactive dust, San Fransisco and Los Angeles being the first to go. The blasts, viable from space, had peppered the entire American Continent, many of them exploding in the air, harmless, as my anti-air emplacements shot them down. Meanwhile in Easter Europe the mushroom clouds were rising from the ICBM's the MRBM's and the bombers I had sent there. The submarines in the Baltic had been a good move, in my opinion. The second wave of bombers was launched a half hour (game time) Later and they flew over the still burning wrecks of Berlin and Moscow. The population counts dropped again as my second wave of bombs took out more targets.
Why did I win? Because I target civilians. In a 6 way Genocidal free for all you have alliances come into play. So you say: "We both nuke this guy" to another guy. Then when we both kick one guy in the back, you stab your 'friend' in the back, using those subs you parked next door to his coastal cities...
Everyone dies. Can you die less then the enemy?

This game is far deeper then it looks. For one:
You've got fleets. You can manuver three kinds of ships. Battle ships, carriers and subs. Subs are the slowest, but can fire MRBM into costal cities. But Carriers can detect subs and drop depth carges. So you have to either go around them or run interference with your battle ships. Your silos can fire either nukes or act as air defence. Do you fire all your nukes at first, to get the first strike in, or wait till someone else attacks you, so you can shoot down their nukes?
And yes, shifting alliences if more then half the fun. Nothing like a premtive strike...

The game is fun for like, three sessions.
All you have to do is basically decide when to launch the nukes and when to use your ships, nothing more to it.
Also, the player that uses ICBMs first usually loses, as his silos are prone to counter attack by the nearby MRBM subs of his enemy.
Its concept is old, the game is technically questionable and very repetitive.
Just imagine spring without the 3d engine, and with only the nuke units.
Everybody dies, even your fun playing this game.

From what I've heard and what was described, I think DefCon is a bad attempt at making money
.
Core gameplay is very repeative.
I didn't like Darwinia very much either - it got boring and tiresome quite quickly.
The only introvision game I enjoyed was Uplink - I wish if they'd make a sequel to it.
It was pretty challenging and fun for the most part (until you get all teh uber hax0r equipment and can haxOr banks within seconds
).

This game is great. Its less about spamming and more about thinking. For example, you COULD fire all your nukes as soon as you get them, but then what? You've got no nukes, and you are an easy target for a counter attack (What with uesd silkos taking 6 minutes to return to their Air defence state) And don't forget, Those nukes you just fire may not even get past. Your bad planning may mean they all get shot down by Anti air, or eaten by fighters. Its all about skill.
Although, some stuff really pisses me off, Such as the fact nukes at the peak of their arc can still be shot down , even though they are about 2000 miles in the air.
Although, It is funny laughing at people who just killed 95 million russians. The jokes on them, The nuclear death cloud will float round the globe and smother your people with nuclear death :D

this game is quite hard to pick up and play well from the moment to go, first time i tried I thought I was winning but suddenly hordes of aircraft came from airbases, carriers, then more that had refueld game back and on and on. my subs ran outa nukes and were useless to fight a fleet entirely of carriers ^^ its fun! but not for long. its like an arcade game. short doses, lots of em
I think it all depends on how much you like nukes and the whole 'feel' of it. If the 'feel' doesn't engage you, neither will the game play. But if the 'feel' does engage you (Like with me and others) then you WILL like it.
Now I just need to buy it! The demo version is getting tiring, as I want to have total...six way...genocidal WAR!

Actually, I find the 'feel' pretty awesome, and wish the gameplay wasn't so lacking because Introversion can sell the game based on that alone.Zoombie wrote:I think it all depends on how much you like nukes and the whole 'feel' of it.
