internet "piracy" as a term makes no sense...
to pirate something is to "TAKE something FROM someone"... not share something with others...
maybe you can say pirates take plausable income revenue? meh... but I think piracy is a poor term.
maybe something like, Hackeracy or Spameriacy or copyright infringement, or something less odd... I dunno...
but yeah,
ARRRG!! MATEY!

Uhh.. Yarr. And so on.
In most cases (yarr) "piracy" doesn't lead to lost sales, since the people who "pirate" stuff wouldn't have bought it in the first place, since they're broke.
So the record companies, or some software company, goes on a piracy site and sees that there's 5000 people sharing this file, they say, ok... 5000 people who aren't paying $150 a copy... WE'VE JUST LOST $750,000 TO PIRACY!!!
....when in reality, those people would just find a different passtime if the file/music/whatever wasn't available for "free".
For instance. If I started charging $20 for every AA download, what would happen? One person would download it and give it to everyone else. Those wouldn't be lost sales, since the rest of those people wouldn't have paid for it anyway. They would've played a free mod instead.
These anti-piracy nuts aren't greedy. They're stupid, that's all.
Look what happened with Galciv 2. This is a freaking awesome game, and it has virtually no copy protection besides a little label that says "please don't pirate this game" or something. I happen to know of someone who's been using a pirated copy up until last week, when he figured, you know, this is definitely worth $50. A sale gained where there would have been none, thanks to piracy.
That "please don't pirate me" label? It got them exponentially more sales than they were expecting. They're raking in the money. Literally, I think they probably have to use rakes. And they're not giving 90% of it to a greedy-assed publisher either, since they ARE the publisher! These people have probably made as much profit, on this one game, as any big-ticket game like Oblivion made, as a result.
And for those of you who were under a rock when it happened, guess what? The anti-piracy company Starforce provided a link to download the game for free from a torrent site. Anti-piracy company promotes piracy because software company didn't give protection money to an anti-piracy company. Protection Money.
