Texture Competition 0001 - Metal Texture

Post by Neddie »

Idea from - http://taspring.clan-sy.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=7084

We have a need for GPL-compliant textures and this seemed like a good way to call for new ones.

Just open up an art program and make a 256x256 texture of something metallic. Post the texture here, and next week we will have a contest to decide whose is the best while the next competition starts.

As this is the first Texture Competition, we encourage artists to have their submissions in by next Friday. In future it will occur weekly.

For great justice, good luck!

I just want to be sure there wasn't one... I'm talking about a per-person limit.

Edit: Caydr's right. Let people go nuts.

Also, if this takes off we're going to need a sticky with rules, zip(or whatever) archives of entries from the past contests, and a record of winners. Since all you win is recognition. I suppose we should bug the mods once we run a few and see how they go.

This is exciting!

We should probably try to limit the discussion in these threads in general, but since this is the first one and we're still finalizing things we shouldn't make any rules about it yet?

No limit, and I've already got a few variations ready to put up... all of them made in the much maligned Paint.

Here's rule #1:
You have to do better than this 5-minute job  :

Don't we want it to be tileable? Or do we not care for the first one?

Up to you. I think mine might be, but I haven't tested too much... my bigger, 512, ones are.

And for the hell of it, a 512.

All done in MS Paint after I posted the original mention about making textures in MS Paint.[/img]

Good stuff. I thought of something... is anyone interested in making textures of the TA style?

I will happily bookmark this thread, watch it, and merrily consume anyone who tries to troll or derail it.

I think the contest should be changed to which texture looks the best on a unit ingame. :O

Well, maybe we will consider that for the future. If some happy go-lucky mod-maker is willing to try these textures on units and post them for our vote about which is the best later, I am all for that.

Um... you guys do realize that making them larger than 64/64 is kind've pointless, if they're going to be used for 3DOs, because they all get "stiched" into the 3DO 2048, right? And making them 512s, when the maximum texture size I use for an ENTIRE UNIT in NanoBlobs is that size, is both wasteful and incredible overkill?

Just checking

This is a great project idea, and I wanted to do this earlier, but nobody stepped up with high-quality bitmaps at the sizes that are actually required.

I was going to point that out... thus the X by X in my initial post... but here we are, so let's just go with what we have for now. Worse comes to worse, someone can use them to make some new metal maps.

Sweet idea. I'll be sure to come up with a tex as soon as I feel like it.
