Control Scheme: Questions from a Complete N00b
Hello, Spring Devs and forum-goers! I've recently downloaded Spring and played around a bit. Bear in mind that I never played Total Annihilation (although that appears to have been a mistake on my part).
The controls are difficult for me to become acclimated to; I'm more familiar with "standard" RTS controls and that of the Total War series. I smiled when I saw the "Total War camera" but the smile faded as I couldn't control anything effeciently. I'm sure this is second nature to you guys, and of course I'm the ignorant noob, but it bothers me.
Can it be changed easily? Is there any interest in changing it in the community? Wouldn't Spring be less scary for users (and perhaps more interesting for potential designers) if it was more standard?

Welcome to Spring, Eightball. We hope you enjoy the game.
I think that once you get used to it, you'll find Spring's mouse controls quite easy to use. I would suggest using and getting used to the Rotatable Overhead mode for the camera.
Oh and ignore the troll, I don't think he's ever had anything to contribute.

Okay, I was just playing TA at a LAN party on friday, and while I agree it is a stabler, cleaner, easier experience in a generic "pac man was a better game then Halo" sense. THE DEFAULT CONTROL SCHEME WAS EVEN WORSE... HOW CAN ANYONE POSSIBLY LIKE THAT AWFULNESS... and the extreamly limmited control... not being able to queue up construction in an incomplete building or give multiple selected con units simultaneouse build orders... oh man... it was impossible and I'm pretty sure I'm happy with Spring's control.Fire Falcon wrote:Play TA. It's Better. Spring and AA suck ass.
And No. Nothing can be changed "easily."

Hi, i can understand how you feel about the controls being overwhelming at first - especially if you havn't played TA or anything with similar controls. But both TA and spring offer much more complexity and control over how you play the game compared to other RTS's. You will find that once you grow accustomed to Spring; that you can do much more with it than other RTS's which is why the 'standard' controls aren't sufficient for spring. As was mentioned there is the ability to queue up commands, set up repeating sequences of commands and there are various visual modes such as the height & metal concentration map and tons of other things which make it easier to play in the long run.
Admittedly the interface isn't amazingly intuitive for new players right now but it is being worked on to improve it for new players. I know personally one of the guys who is helping to speed up the building of the new GUI, and from what i hear real progress is being made there. In the mean time can I direct you to the Wiki for the controls guide:

Hope this helps
