My Source games keep breaking for no reason.

Post by Drone_Fragger »

You know, Source? Half life 2 and mods.
anyways, anyone know why? They do a silent Freeze (Ie, No errors) And then I usaully ahve to restart my PC. At first I thought it was my Ram, Because after watchinhg Ram usage in task managaer, I found it woulkd freeze up. Then, After checking my ram, I thought it was my hard drive. I defragged it and scandisked it, Still no luck. Then I thouhgt it was the HT on my P4, So turned that off. I thought that had fixed it, But still no luck/ Now I think its my wireless, becuase when it drops packets, Steam collapses and crashes. Anyways, Anyone have any idea whats causing it, Or, Preferably, Know how to fix it?
My brother has the samer problem, on a near identical PC. So it could be the wireless.

CPU and video card overheating both cause these error-less freezes. Dust out your case and make sure it isn't scuttled away in some box cycling it's own air, computers need to belch out alot of hot air to keep them selfs running. If possible move your computer into a cooler room or get some room fans blowing towards it to lower the overall temperatures.

Use an application like Motherboard Monitor to verify your CPU and computer case are running at appropriate temperatures. Many video cards also have similar applications.

Vaguely on subject, anyone know how to underclock a video card? Mine overheats, and when it does it starts rendering at like 2FPS in whatever game I'm playing (Spring, Red Orchestra, etc.)... I think that if I reduced cycles/second by like 10% it might fix the problem, and now instead of running at 50FPS for a minute and 2FPS for 10 seconds I'll run at 45FPS all the time, which is vastly preferable.

do you have an nvidia card?

this unlocks clock speed setings in the driver

Try underclocking your video card or even CPU, Source is testy.

Is that really the result of OCing? I've had an insufficient power supply and a mainboard that didn't deliver enough power cause similar problems. Also the 2 FPS slowdown I get tends to be caused by exceeded texture memory.
