Turn off the retarded spam/flood filter

Post by Caydr »

It's not blocking any actual spam and just serves to irritate people.

it is there to stop server specific channel flooding that can crash the server because someone has an inability to controll that client side in his code..

People are still able to spam to extremes.

Back a few weeks ago you could crash the server before you got to the spam limit.

There're essentially no effective flood controls, such as preventing people form sending the message if they're sent it 5 or 6 times in the last 5 seconds

why not just kick, instead of banning? Would serve the same purpose, wouldn't it?

Because that only works for the dumber spammers. The smarter ones just telnet into the server and spam it from there, having no client side restrictions at all...

E: this doesn't mean client side restrictions in addition to server side restrictions is a bad idea of course: the more spam you can stop the earlier, the better

TOBI,

I can understand that. I was just thinking that for common everyday usage there are a lot of things that really should have been done to the lobby. However, it being written in delphi makes finding poeple to patch it hard. Something that shocked me when I found out about it.

Who outside of betalord is working on that thing?

Actually betalord ahs enver accepted a patch off of anyone, he doesnt want patchers. If he did then he'd have accepted at least 1 of altarics improvements.

Oh yeah, that guy altarics wrote a cool lobby improvement!

Why wasn't all of that added in?

Don't ask me. When it's not busy getting broken by every tiny tweak, it's wonderful.

Something todo with the usual reasons he gives for not liking a change,

'it's messy code'
(Adding support for arbitrary commands to the protocol(for new features))
'it has no point'
(he's been quoted as working on a map rating system for TASClient as part of his new map site (see Altarics lobby if you cant wait for it))
'no response'
(me pointing out a slew of bugs in chanserv)

Alteric's code wasn't very clean... AF betalord just doesn't like I think... This is my opinion and does not reflect the views of the spring team...

On an unrelated note, I really want to play with AF lobby to see how clean it is...

That may be, but couldn't betalord just implement the stuff altaric was doing at the time? Then we would have those features.

Wasp, like many of the rest of us, got tired of the same ol stupid crap around here and decided to stop production.

For example, I have only played 2 games of spring in the past month.

Apparently not. Honestly I don't understand it any better then you do, some of the stuff altaric did was stuff that I have wanted for lobby for forever, but altaric's releases aren't as stable or pretty as betalord's :(

and it would take a whole heck of a lot of work for betalord to clean up altarics code? If that is indeed the reason... THat's absurd, the work is already done for the most part.
