Hearts of Iron Doomsday

Post by el_muchacho »

Looking for a historical strategy game, I read about the Hearts of Iron series of wargames, which have been consistently receiving raves by the press, - and most importantly -, by gamers, as being the deepest and most accurate PC wargames around.

See for 'example
Gamespot
Gamespy
1up
Gamersmark
Gamezone

So I confidently decided to go out and buy a copy of the standalone add-on (meaning you don't need the original game, it is included) named Doomsday (at 20$, it's pretty cheap).

Ok, so what ? One of the first things I do when I try a game is look at the credits.
And what do I read in the programmers section ?
"Stefan Johansson", alias our beloved SJ !
My goodness, I just checked in the forum, SJ was hired by that independent game editor that makes great wargames (Europa Universalis, Victoria among others) named Paradox Interactive.
Ok, granted, he only had the time to work on the add-on, but he did a good job at it, and he's probably working on HoI3 now.

So if you want to thank SJ while treating yourself with a hell of a game with which you'll learn more about WW2 than in any textbook (watch out for the learning curve though, it IS complicated, and the demo doesn't help :?), go and buy this Doomsday.

He kinda told us in his goodbye-post that he'd be working @ Paradox..

Fortunately, it's not the opnion of thousands of players around the globe. Infancy bugs and issues have long been taken care of and the game is pretty stable. But of course, the graphial aspect of the interface still remains basic and old-fashioned.

No it didn't.

You might try Pac-man for a game more suited to your capacity to deal with complexity. Though I do admit, having four different monsters that try to chase you around is a bit redundant...

That game looks sooo awesome

It's like... real war.

But before I get it I'll have to get a computer, and I don't want to get a computer until both Windows Vista comes out and I have enough money to get a good one so...

Maybe I'll play it in a few years.

I play Spring on my Parents' computer, but they have this annoying habit of kicking me off so they can download music from iTunes or play chess.

I installed Spring on my cat! It was difficult to find the video out, but it runs fast and smooth. AND my units always land on their feet!

I'll have to look into this title, even though I was supposed to be not buying any new games until SupCom...

I actually run Spring on a Buffalo. Costs more in livestock feed than my computer costs in electricity, but it's decently fast and rock stable.

Back on topic- thanks for the tip, will investigate.

Paradox makes great games. I still pick up good old Europa Universalis 2 from time to time. Doomsday is also great, especially the added spying adds to the gameplay.
Now I'm looking forward to Victoria: Revolutions. Hopefully it will make Victoria more playable. =)
