Camera things!
I had a realy cool idea walking home from lunch. I was thinking about Dawn of War, and how when you zoomed down next to a bunch of space marines with heavy machine guns, the camera shakes andyour speakers boom out realy loud machin gun noises. Why not do that for Spring, jsut more so. So if a nuke gose of in your base, it will blind you! The explosion would be so bright, and make sutch a loud nois it will hurt you to look/listen to your computer. Cause i found in TA, you often dont notice the nuke strike till when you look for your comander and notice he's not there anymore. SO if your cameras looking at a Nuke blast, their would be afterimages on your computer, and the skreen would fill with static as the EMP hits you. Then it would shudder as the shock wave smashes past it. Small explosions would casue shakes, and if your close enough to it, the camera will do other even more drastic things. Of course their are ways to avoid thease distractions. Like not looking at a nuke blast, and zooming out of the batilfield. Also their sould be an option in the start up menue, or maby th option menue, whitch switches the camera from Incorpreal to Vescreal.

Well it would only hapen if you A) Have the viceral Camera setting on and B) Your camera is close to the explosion or nuke blast. Maby you could set how many camer effects their are, like None, Medium, Lots. Medium would be just a mild nuke blur/static effect and Lots would have every thing and then some. None is kindof misleading cause it would actualy keep the screen shakeing ones. Also Lots could add rain hitting the camera if its raining or soemthing like that. It would be distracting, but in a cool way

Actually improving on screen shakes over OTA is almost a necessity if they want to transfer that aspect over. Just moving the camera around randomly on the X and Z axis probably won't always look too good in the perspectives you can get in this game. And of course you wouldn't want screen shake when piloting a unit, so that has to be remembered when putting in the screen shake... (though getting thrown in a Peewee would be fun, I can't wait [almost]
)

Ok, so first screenshakes should topple nearby trees if the hasnt hasnt already flattened them.
Next what i meant was nto nukes give a huge blinding flash that lasts minutes at a time btu a quick flash and then a large explosion that glows white/yellow for 10 secs before dissipating completly after which the ground underneath should have a radial black charred pattern, and maybe fi the trees where laying on their sides pointed away from the blast, I dont want to go and see what survived my nuke to see burning trees

Anyone ever play Rise of Nations (what a dumb question that eh?). My favoret part is that when you nuke something, the screen gose black and white then fades to color. Lets do that, pluse a afterimage, musroom cloud, fallout, firestorm, shock wave, and finaly a screen shake. Cause i want you to KNOW when you get hit by a nuke. ALso the nuke exspense and damage/blastradius sould be upped. Also how about orbital death beams whitch can "draw" all over the map. So when it fires you can move the beam, damageing the base even more and as a pluse you can write rude words in the map....

No. There's a reason every decent player has +noshake in his recorder macros.
And I would truely hate a game with sound that jumps from normal to defeaning without warning. You see, since I often play at night, either the neighbour will sue me, either I'll have to cut the sound entirely. (I don't like wearing earphones). Sound in game isn't there to make you feel how painful war can be to your ear, sound is just another mean to convey information to the players.
As the blinding flashes, luckily monitors can't produce enough light to damage you, but still, past the first time, it would be a great annoyance, not an enjoyable feature. Since nuking is rather powerful thing, I agree that it needs more effects than in the videos where it's hardly more noticable than a regular explosion, but not to the point of staring at a white screen for a few seconds. Because of the way the gameplay flow in Total Annihilation, there's no set limit to how far the war can escalate. That's a particularity of TA, in nearly every other RTS ressources wear out over time or at least are limited, and special weapons are dratistically limited with rules like one for player fireable each 15mins, while in TA ressources just keep on getting more and more plentiful even after hours. Some long games with special rules can end in massive nuke war, with a constant rain of nuke missiles while players still have to keep on micro-managing everything as fast as possible, so please forget any idea about nuke explosion effect preventin the player to play even for an instant with screenshakes or blinding flashes.
Just go to a disco if you want light flashes and painfully loud sounds. Strategic games is not were they belong.

For the whole screen-shaking thing, i have one word to sum it up:
meh.
I mean, its nice once in a while, but it would get annoying relatively quickly.
Zwzsg is right, in that virtually every online TA player has +noshake (which stops all screenshaking) as the first thing they type.
So here's my input:
Have it on by default, have +noshake turn it off (like TA).

Well it is a optional feture
like left and right mouse interface and whitch music CD you listen too. Also i never turn of screen shakes. It helps to know when some one is shooting something at someone. Also Nukes sould be more expensive, more powerfull and have all the cool fetures like screenshake, afterimage, sepia tones and static. But if you dont like screenshake afterimage, speia tones and static, turn it off!

it's annoying and it shouldn't be default, it really shouln't even be implemented.
ta isn't going to have the detail that dawn of war does, not to mention having a camera close to the action is going to be a pain in the arse. no serious player will care about the upclose graphics, because they are too busy playing the game.
i appreciate the presentation oriented idea however i don't see people using it alot, mostly because like everyone says having all those flashing lights in their faces.
