The Spring Project
This shouldn't be MTRed because it is a change that would be easy to make* and is generally agreed upon.
Change the name of the project from "TA Spring" to "Spring".
Reasoning:
-Avoids legal copyright issues with Total Annihilation.
-The project isn't about making a 3D TA engine anymore; it's progressed beyond that.
-Sounds cooler.
*The code had better not depend on the name of the project being "TA Spring".

Name Change
Hi, I'm a noob here. So my opinion may not count.
But from what I've seen it's an ace engine which would lend itself to rpg's as well as maybe racing games with some minor modifications - so maybe Spring RTS isn't the best of ideas?
Just a thought :)

Not that your opinions don't count, so much as they're wrong. But hey, you can try...Ian Hatchett wrote:Hi, I'm a noob here. So my opinion may not count.

I could imagine Spring turning into an RPG capable engine with enough time. There seem to be a reasonable number of cross over type games that combine elements of both genres such as Warlords Battlecry and Worlds of Warcraft etc. I also think there are a range of features that could be added to the Spring engine that could improve the range of potential RTS possibilities, and also support RPG type possibilities. For instance the ability to collect items, the ability to trigger special abilities (such as spells), the ability to have persistent heroes/units saved from one battle to the next.
Although whether it would be worth making the engine as good at RPG as it is at RTS, or whether it may take on some additional RPG type options to complement the RTS is another question.

Keep the link with Total Annihilation.
Without it, Spring is just a TA knock-off. I mean, realistically, 85% of Spring is still essentially TA, just redone. The extra 15% is certainly makes a hell of a lot of difference, but it's still essentially TA, as much as people like to kick and scream and say otherwise.

We're not going to ban OTA mods and remove 3do support or anything, just remove it from the name and such.Warlord Zsinj wrote:-1

It now is TA spring. But the name would suggest that it won't go any further then that. I'd say name it Spring. And it's not the first thread about this ^.^'Warlord Zsinj wrote:-1

Zsinj, just because Spring uses the same resource model and some other things as Total Annihilation doesn't make it a TA knockoff.
Or rather, it does, but that's a rather broad standard of knockoffness. By that standard most of the RTSes out there are Warcraft knockoffs... even though certain elements of, say, Age of Empires II were inspired by/copied from Warcraft, it isn't really fair to categorize it as a Warcraft clone set in the medieval world.

Make it another way around, and it has my vote: Spring:TA. This basically means that it's the Spring project, running a mod called Total Annihilation. Because really, people play it like that because there aren't many real TA-independent mods out there, most still use either the 3do format, or textures, or races from TA.

No, I disagree, Felix.
At the moment, TA Spring isn't a TA knockoff - because it is referencing TA. Spring essentially is TA. It can't even be remotely denied. It's not like "Dark Reign" can be considered a knock-off of Command & Conquer, because while they have similar premises, and vaguely similar designs, they are quite clearly different games.
But Spring is literally TA. The SY's have built TA, and then have improved it. It's not like Dark Reign was C&C and they just improved a couple of things.
If you look literally at Spring, the entire design is TA. The game design is TA. The UI is TA. The entire progression of the game is TA. The changes that make Spring so different are truely minor. Sure, it's enough to make a big difference for players - but ultimately, the game is still 3D TA.
If you profess anything otherwise, you'd be lying.
And honestly, if someone is really not going to play Spring because it has the words "TA" attached to it, do we really want them to be playing Spring with us? I know I don't.
