MTR Candidate: DUAL SCREEN

Post by IceXuick »

Although it's notyet in the wiki's MTR list, my guess it's come around some time before, but i'd like to know something about it:

Just vote and let's check if this can be on a wanted- or F*ck*ff-list

(also interesting howmany people probably will play supcom with it)

Dual view rocks my socks, but it's also pretty far down on my priority list for dev time.

I vote for the possibility to be there, but dual screen generally puts a hit on graphics performance so I probably won't be using it. I only use dual once in a while (was great for guildwars. Map on one screen, game on the other :-)

BTW guys... tell me you aren't this clueless. Any video card with svideo out is capable of dual view, such as hook it into your tv, or run it through a converter to RCA and plug it into your tv. In case your tv is just too goddamn old, svideo out > Rca converter > RF Modulator > coax to tv. B TW some RF modulators have svideo inputs.

yes FA, you right, everyone should know this.. but you're also right on the performance hit.. i only play real games in single view still.. maybe i (and everyone that doesn't have a second monitor) should venture out more in the real world for a job and just buy 2 7900GT's and 2 21" LCD's !!!

I like being able to see the lobby when someone dosent get in the game or whatever on the other screen. But then again having 2 screens playing TA would be :o :-) :o !!

Dunno if my 6600GT could chop it though

You *can* play OTA with dualscreens, just go to the registry settings for TA at:

HKCU\Software\Cavedog Entertainment\Total Annihilation

Then edit the tags "DisplaymodeHeight" and "DisplaymodeWidth" to be at the resolution you want, and set your TA shortcut to read this in the path:

"C:\Cavedog\Totala\Totala.exe" -d

adjust the path if necessary. The menus will be in 640x480, but once the game is started it will expand across both screens.

Unfortunately there's no way to make the minimap in TA any larger :(

I use two monitors, but at the moment my computer would poop its pants if it tried to run a GAME on both screens, so its cool if its supported, but using the other monitor for lobby and Vent and such is fine enough for me.

Dont majority of 3d cards only support running 3d graphics i.e directx / opengl on only 1 output ? Why other one = only 2d support

Obiously this gives advantages to the few who has two sceerns (I happen to be one of them), so it's an unfair advantage.
Though, not that the atvantage is enourmously large. Running at a higher resolution then the others gives an advantage as wel.
hm... It should be made possible then. But as Erom said. There are more important things to attent to.

but i wouldnt have the map on a whole screen. Think of one monitor guarding your base and the other one coordinates your attack - that would be very usefull!

Two 3d vies yes, like in supcom demo?

yeah dual would give an advantage, but this can be fixed in online multiplayer with a single or dual only server/host.

My guess is that it is possible to have 2 DX 3d views on both monitors, SupCom dit it, but maybe they were using dual vid's..

In OTA in the settings bit the scroollbar that does resolutions has both 4:3 resolutions AND dualscreen resolutions in it so no need to go into the registry.

Blew me away about a month ago when I started up OTA to have a game with old AA fans (lost horribly, no doubt) and it actually detected 1280x800, my LCD native resolution.

I haven't tried in a recent version but running spring windowed did allow you to stretch it across 2 screens. It was a little buggy and it fell over above a certain width, probably 2k but it did look rather cool too.

It probably fell over at 1920, which is the greatest 1 card can manage in 3D, unless its a pefesional card like a quatro FX or some such. I know it will work up to 1920 though (as im running it at that... :-) ). Would Wide screen users be able to have it set up like that but all on one monitor... only I dont reckong I realy need 1920 x 1200 pixels of playing area, having a nice big minimap is tress cool.

That or ill have to by a 17 inch to turn sideways next to this one... that would be cool. (but then thats like paying 200£ to play a computer game thats suposed to be free... Id be nuts...)

hmm, with a nvidia card ho do you setup two seperate desktops with different resolutions so that ones on a Tv and the others on the primary monitor?

It's annoying havign to shift the resolution down to get a cinematic desktop so that text is readable on my TV.

I'd prefer one huge minimap, and one gameplay screen. That way, The bonus isn't huge, Wouldn't use up too much resources, and would fit more in with what most people would do in supreme commander. (honestly, There top-of-the-range rig was having problems doing both screens at once. Who can honestly say they have a top of the range rig?)
