Why it isn't so smart to use drugs

Post by PauloMorfeo »

From another thread in Happypenguin.org:
PauloMorfeo wrote:At the brain we have some hormones that regulate our mood. One of them is endorfine (not too sure if that's the english name) which gives us a feeling of pleasure and peace.

What drugs do, like nicotine, is produce an excess of hormones, most comonly endorfine.
That ruins the balance of quimicals in the brain which must, therefore, adjust. Doing so, the brain ends up producing less endorfine.

So when the extra endorfine produced by drugs disapears, guess what!? We have less endorfine than normal and feel the exact oposite of pleasure and peace.
Having the brain adjusted to produce less «pleasure hormones», expecting an extra suply of them from external sources (drugs), is what an addiction really is.

That's why it is sooo stupid all those people that say that they smoke just to make them feel relaxed, because they are unrelaxed in the first place because they are dependant of nicotine.

We can't compare «normal» habits, like beeing used to eat oranges every day at 6:00 PM with beeing addicted to drugs.

Note:
Nicotine is extremely toxic and something like just 10 mg is enough to kill an adult person. If you check, most cigaretts have an indication of having 9 mg of nicotine.

One other funny hormone, is serotonine (or is it dopamine?), which regulates the comunications within the grey cells in the brain (what's they're name?). LSD, and some «magical» mushrooms, produce excess serotonine and we end up receiving completely scrambled/exagerated information of the world around us as well as have our reasoning modified too.
Think about that next time you see someone (or yourself) saying stuff like «Ho, this day was so stressfull, i need to smoke a few grass to relax!» or «Damm the stress of the exam. 3 hours in there, i need a smoke!». Think carefully why you are so unrelaxed in the first place.

yes, drugs are bad. but the same goes for alcohol and nicotine - upsetting the balance of stuff isn't a good idea. not in the long term anyway.

Somehow quoting yourself is always a bit weird...

But I guess the fact that smoking people quickly look older than non-smoking means that nicotine does already more damage besides just being addictive...

Drugs are bad. Cigaretts are also pretty bad. But the quoted bit here is bullshit. The lethal dose for humans is more like 40-60mg, and the average cigarett contains slightly more than 1mg. Absorption rates are affected by pH and a bunch of other things.

What good would it do the tobacco company to almost kill you? They want to create addicts, not corpses.

I don't smoke, drink, or use any illegal drugs, in fact I tend to avoid most legal drugs asside from caffeine... don't imagine that I am trying to look down on you from a moral high horse... vegetarianism pisses me off but I don't mind them as people and I expect you to treat me with equal courtesy...

The problem si that a lot fo people do ti for no apaprent reason btu because their friends are doing it to begin with.

And when they later see all the bad stuff they ingore it and go into denial. Though that isnt always the case, simpyl stating the fact isnt enough.

«Ho, this day was so stressfull, i need to smoke a few grass to relax!»
I was used to it for 3 years, then i didn't it for 2 years then i did again for a week and since then i didn't where's the problem? I don't feel unbalanced if i don't smoke it.

Somehow i don't think it's that addictive (my only problem are cigarettes)

Yeah, weed is supposedly not very addictive and not as bad for you as cigarettes, I think.

someone told me weed is 11 times as bad as you as cigarrets, but as weed isn't addictive and people typically smoke less of it than cigs... it balances out.

A: there are alot less processing chemicals in your average joint then your average ciggarret
B: no one smokes the equivalent mass of 2 packs of ciggarrets a day in weed.
C: You can orally ingest weed to get the effects, it doesn't need to be smoked.

I was under the impression that Marijuana was neither as toxic or as addictive as Tobacco. 'Course, processing makes a big difference, but hell, they're a danger to your health anyways.

Actually, a little alcohol every day (say, a medium glass of wine) is actually good for your body.

Apparently its the alcohol and red wine is even better.
Excessive alcohol occasionally is an essential part of a well-balanced youth, with the recommended weekly amounts of sex, fun and social.
Other drugs can also help the understanding of mind and body better, though anything in chronic excess is necessarily bad for you.
