Battlefield 2142 E3 movie

If you haven't seen this, it's really something to behold.

For me, BF1942 was pretty lame except for desert combat. And even then, I couldn't believe how bad the performance was. I mean, 640x480 @ 40fps. Wow. That's bad. BF2 was a hundred times better here, although I still thought the game wasn't so great, especially when the coolest vehicles - apaches - had had their control scheme from DC fubared. DC had phoenomenal copter control, even if it took a while to learn it.

I think that ultimately what really killed BF2, for me, was that modern combat isn't very balanced or fun by nature. For instance, fighters are just too bloody fast to be fun to fly. I mean, if you fly in a straight line you can either go slow enough that you can shoot at stuff BUT are also going to plow into the ground, or else go so fast that you can't shoot at crap and you hit the invisible map border in 0 seconds flat.

Since BF2142 is set in a time period where the technology is a complete unknown and realism doesn't exist because there's no point of reference, I think there's some chance that maybe DICE will pull off a half-decent game. With total creative freedom and a team of good developers, anything's possible, so that's a +1 for potential.

On the other hand, the publisher is EA, so -5 for a 10 minute dev cycle and total lack of patches or customer support. :(

well it looks good, but thats never been a problem for battlefield.
it'll probly just be the same half-assed shit they pull of every time, and then they'll make another game and say that ones gonna make up for it.

All I can say is... learn to fly.

There is nothing wrong with the chopper control in Bf2, and nothing wrong with the maneuverability of the jets.

edit: and I'm STILL not buying 2142 after the bug-ridden mess of BF2. Though I love it so.

I loved BF1942 and DC, despite the fact that even my current computer can only run it on minimum settings.

This looks like UT04 with less arcade-ness. Which I like.

The battlefield series went downhill from 42, and even that was only really fun with stuntsmod.

I loved BF Veitnam. That game was GREAT!

Napalm and music from the sixtys/seventys are all good.

Planetside comes to mind.

Its like BF, its MMO with 400 players per map and its free scince a few month, you can just download it, although it 2GB heavy.

http://www.planetside.com

Actually, i just watched the trailer, and all the features shown there (drop pods, mechs, tanks, generators as objectives, infantry combat) are also included in Planetside.

You should give that game a try, its free, its combined arms, and its damn fun.

I don't know what's with me these days but I watched that with a giant 'meh' feeling.
I mean that really didn't look like warefare 150 years from now, more like 20, with mecha and giant flyie-things.
Ah well it's probably just me and I'm sureit'll be a great game.

Well I don't know about jets. Maybe with a good joystick it'd be better. As for choppers, you misunderstood me completely. I'm not saying that they're hard to fly or anything like that. I'm saying they're so brutally easy to fly that I could do so with my eyes closed. I much preferred the harder-to-master but more flexible helicopter controls from Desert Combat.

EA's just done what all big-name publishers do nowadays: they take a great game and dumb it down so that granny can still get a couple of frags now and then. The difference between Desert Combat and BF2 is like the difference between Counterstrike and Unreal Tournament.

"One shot kills? Nah, that's too realistic. Let's make it so you need 8 point-blank headshots with an assault rifle - that way it'll be more fun all round!"

Ah I see.

In many ways though that is the realm of the mod - realistic games probably don't appeal to as wide a an audience base because they are much harder.

btw, I fly jets with a mouse, not my fancy joystick.

p.s. Operation Peacekeeper mod for BF2 is pretty good, more realisitic in terms of smallarms damage, anyway.

free how? to download, or is there no monthly fee either (which ought to be expected for MMO-type games)?

1942 was the best one (with mods). I bet I'm one of the best 10% DC helo pilots out there (at flying, not at hitting stuff :p) I'm using a mouse, too
Vietnam..let's say I just didn't like it
BF2 was by far the worst. Bugs, bugs, bugs, screwed GF4 owners for money, terrible balancing, stupid controls. And every goddamn idiot could fly a chopper :s

Err, it may be free to play for the next year, but that doesn't mean you can get your battle rank maxed out. It only goes to 6, which blows pretty hard.
