Iraqi War to cost 1 Trillian Dollars

The One Certainty About Iraq: Spiralling Costs for Americans

April 20, 2006 ├óÔé¼ÔÇØ There are many uncertainties about the progress made by coalition forces and the future prospects for stability and democracy in Iraq, but there is at least one indisputable fact: The Bush administration vastly underestimated the costs of the Iraq war.

Not only in human lives, but in monetary terms as well, the costs of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq far exceed the administration's initial projection of a $50 billion tab. While the number of American casualties in Iraq has declined this year, the amount of money spent to fight the war and rebuild the country has spiralled upward.

The price is expected to almost double after lawmakers return to Capitol Hill next week when the Senate takes up a record $106.5 billion emergency spending bill that includes $72.4 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The House passed a $92 billion version of the bill last month that included $68 billion in war funding. That comes on top of $50 billion already allocated for the war this fiscal year.

Poor Planning Could Push War Costs to $1 Trillion

ABC analyst Tony Cordesman, who also holds the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy for the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says the exorbitant costs come down to poor planning.

"When the administration submitted its original budget for the Iraq war, it didn't provide money for continuing the war this year or any other. We could end up spending up to $1 trillion in supplemental budgets for this war."

According to the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, the United States spent $48 billion for Iraq in 2003, $59 billion in 2004, and $81 billion in 2005. The center predicts the figure will balloon to $94 billion for 2006. That equates to a $1,205 bill for each of America's 78 million families, on top of taxes they already pay.

Bill Will Linger Long After Withdrawal

Analysts say the increases can be blamed on the rising cost of maintaining military equipment and developing new equipment. As the cost of military equipment escalates, the cost of the war escalates. In fact, developing state-of-the-art weapons to defeat insurgents and their roadside bombs will hit the wallets of American taxpayers for years to come.

"The Department of Defense has increased its investment in new equipment from $700 billion to $1.4 trillion in the coming years," Cordesman said.

Army Chief of Staff Peter Schoomaker recently warned lawmakers that the cost of upkeep and replacement of military equipment would continue even after U.S. forces withdrew from Iraq. To fully reequip and upgrade the U.S. Army after the war ends will cost $36 billion over six years, and that figure assumes U.S. forces will start withdrawing from Iraq in July, and be completely out of the country by the end of 2008.

Hey, whats wrong with starting a war with the pretext of stopping WMDs, then upon finding none trying to cover it up by claiming theres a tyrant in power then killing several times more people than that "tyrant" did, all while bullshitting their people repeatedly and manipulating the media? Its not like the money spent could completely stop world hunger for almost a whole year hey? what??? it could?? oh well its not like any of us should give a shit right? its only four grand pulled out of the pockets of every american man, woman and child (luckly the illegals dont pay taxes!). But dont bother complaining, remeber guantanamo? At least its better than getting shot in the head 7 times in the subway in london because you are brazillian, and we all know how much of a terrorist scum country brazil is!

And about canola oil:
Canola can be grow. Oil can not. Canola is therefore renewable. If people keep depending on oil, when it runs out they will be fucked. Start working on supporting alternatives such as canola, hydrogen, and electric now, and when oil does run out, no one will care. Even if it is more expensive now, converting everything into alternative fuel sources a when the oil runs out will be more expensive.

Atm war is still cheaper for the oil it brings, and i expect it to be for a fair while, there are still quite a few "insurgent" countries that coincidentally have large oil reserves left.

The main problem with renewable fuels is not the production, that is easily sorted out, but the simultaneous implementation all over a country and ensuring that they do not run out. It can be extremely expensive.
In brazil they introduced sugarcane ethanol as a fuel and because it was 2x cheaper than petrol (mainly due to government grants, but still cheaper even without them). There was mass purchasing of ethanol cars but they had supply and coverage problems and the whole thing was a fiasco, ethanol was seen as unreliable and its use almost completely died out. Only now when flex fuel engines have been developed allowing a car to run on either fuel that the country's ethanol initiative has really kicked off. Estimates predict they will have over 80% of the cars with flex fuel by the end of the decade, with most petrol stations providing it already, and thats a hell of an achievement considering the purchasing power of its population who doesnt change their cars every couple years.

That and most brand new south american cars come with flex feul tech as standard.

Funny though that Bush should drive upto captial hill in an armada of gas guzzling cars of the worse kind then preach the benefits of renewable ethanol based fuels....

Eitherway invading a country for oil isnt exactly soundproof, just look at iraq atm, insurgency burning and attacking oil lines, they've lsot billions of dolalrs of revenue, revenue inteded to make the war cheaper, whereas the same tactic in the first gulf war was so succesful, america nearly made a profit..

Oh I definately agree, however, it needs to be extremely mass produced before it will be viable.

BTW are you guys aware that there is more oil in the alaskan oil fields than in the entire middle east conbined (it's never been tapped, so it's not all that suprising).

ALso, all of you guys who are all screwed up over the reason for going to war... All your favorite democrats and liberals supported going to war. The sound bites are readily available. Every war that america has been in there has been faulty intelligence. We got bombed at pearl harbor, and that was do to a mix of stupidity and the policy of neutrality that america had at the time.

I only recently became aware that most high school students don't learn much about WW2 any more. I find that extremely sickening, however, let me educate a little bit, becasue WW2 was my most studied war in school. Many many great things were invented during the course of that war, not to mention the sheer brilliance of engeneers during that time.

When WW2 was being fought, america had a policy of neutrality. Americans had the idea in their heads that it was a eruo thing and had no wish to join in. Volunteers in the american air force went overseas to help out the RAF (Royal Air Force). The RAF included some of the most brilliant pilots, and most of the guys that went over there from the US were extremely good as well.

At one point, the heads in japan decided that since america was not really in the war, but had huge amounts of war related vessels and the like, the would attack america and take us out of the fight once and for all. Thanks to the policy of neutrality and the absolute crappy/lack of intelligence we got our asses handed to us on that day.

The vietnam war was full of bad intelligence. That war by all means was the worst handled war in all existence. 1 day we're on one side, next day we don't know what side we're fighting for... When the soldiers came back, they didn't recieve a warm welcome, they were spit at, yelled at, had trash and other things thrown at them... Absolutely horrible.

Anyway, I suppose there isn't much point to listing wars, however, remember this...
Saddam Hussein was killing his own people with abandon. He anounced many many times that IRAQ was working towards WMD's. Many of the inspectors in interviews said that they believed very strongly that Iraq WMD's, and iraq was a threat. Bill Clinton, Howard Dean, Hillary, Jimmy Carter, and most of the formost democrats and liberals made speeches of how we needed to go into iraq and remove saddam, yet when it's convenient they flip flop to agree with the polls for political gain. Stop only listening to the drive by media and start doing your own research if you are actually intereste4d in what's REALLY going on, because the media will only tell you what they want you to hear. If you can't understand that then I feel sorry for you, becasue the media will lead you around like sheep and I find that disheartening and sickening.

America has a bad habit of having an extremely short attention span. Mark my words. If a president gets elected into office in 08 and immediately pulls the troops from iraq, it will turn into a disaster.

Think about it people! We had liberated a totalitarion society from the clutches of PURE EVIL! Doesn't that mean anything to you? We are fighting for justice and against indecency in the world, and IRAQ has a democratic government! Doesn't that excite anyone? Women in iraq can now do so much more than they could ever do and can actually make a difference. Jesus, take some pride into what we are accomplishing, because it is a hell of a lot, and the drive by media won't tell you that, because the worse things are in iraq, the more they like it.

On "domestic Spying". Are you guys aware that only calls made FROM KNOWN AL QUIDA NUMBERS were tapped? Calls that were tapped were calls that were made from outside the US to someone inside the us AND ONLY IF THE CALLING NUMBER WAS KNOWN TO BE AN AL QUIDA/TERRORIST NUMBER. Your phone sex calls to your girlfriends were not monitored. Only americans who recieved calls from terrorist numbers were monitored, and that is the absolute truth, but the drive by media won't tell you that. The media wants you to believe that calls made inside the US were monitored as well. If you actually spent some time researching this you would know all of this already.

Ahh well, book is done for now. I really wish these political threads would be deleted, there is no need for them in these forums.

That may eb true IN AMERICA, but thats because you follow the president and if you dont your accused of beign unpatriotic in the media possible a traitor.

Here in europe I'm not aware of 1 single country that went to war that had huge political and public support, on the cotnrary, in the UK every newspaper was against ti all ym favourite politicians where against it, the majority of people thought it was a bad idea, and the newspapers mocked for the government over ti for a long time, twas 2 years after the invasion the mirror finally stopped the counter it had on page 2 counting how many days in iraq without finding WMD's, I hear the spanish government lost their next election too because of iraq, as did many fther european governments that helped invade iraq ans saw opposition parties cash in........

WW2 was one of the best boosts America could ever get to its economy. It was the definite needed reason to lift it out of the remains of the depression. just like in 9/11 this "faulty intelligence", follow-up attack by "enemies" and then publicly-supported war turned out INCREDIBLY useful for those in power. WW2 helped America incredibly, and just check the employment/GDP figures before and after if you doubt me. Being attacked "for no apparent reason" is the solution to turn a war from a unjustified slaughter condemned by the masses to a fight against evil and oppression supported by all. Its been done since the Egyptians, sometimes the attacks are staged by the attacked nation itself, but i wont delve deeper into that, just look that up for Cuba and the Japanese invasion of Manchuria.

So far we are still TRYING to prove Saddam killed less than a thousand people in a couple of occasions. The two million figure divulged by some is pure utter bullshit. The war has killed hundreds of thousands, the sanctions applied since the gulf war completely messed up the countries infrastructure. Compare Iraq under Saddam in the 80's, a prosperous Middle East nation to the current hellhole it is now. Hell, compare it in 10 years; it will be just as fucked if not worse. The war accomplished absolutely NOTHING to the Iraqi people. There├óÔé¼Ôäós no point being free to wear skirts if your children are starving, your husband was shot and the rest of your family blown up by those so smart bombs.

And you really think the government will let the public know of its secret operations? Are you really that naive to believe that if the government was really tapping into normal people's numbers they would come out and tell you about it? How do you think they find "KNOWN AL QUIDA NUMBERS " in first place? Do you honestly think that your government, or ANY government would reveal that they are really tapping their domestic numbers, generating huge public outcry and deterring terrorists from making domestic calls?

Ahh well, book is done for now. I really wish these political threads would be deleted, there is no need for them in these forums.
