Looking forward to this mod as well :)

Does it use any copyrighted materials from OTA?

Is there a lot of copyrighted materials or just a few, so it would be possible to change them?

If it don't have any copyrighted materials, it would be certainly the best choice.
(But I don't know what have to be done to be copyrighted materials independant, or even if it's possible.)

the problem is the sounds and textures are copyrighted too....i think.

And i remember this being all 3DO (i think), which means they probably used cavedog textures. it certainly looks that way from the screen shots

If someone has the intention of providing a set of new textures, I could extend by 3do util to change a list of texture names to another list of texture names...

Yes this mod uses almost exclusively cavedog textures as I have no way of really making new ones nor am I sure of my ability to do so... however most of the models are not cavedog and have been extensively edited, as well as most of the weapon sort of sounds also not being cavedog..

I dont have any intention of redoing what content I use from cavedog at this time since I very much doubt any lawsuits are pending and because it is more work than I alone can manage.... It was not my intent however to make a purely original content mod.. rather to make an original concept mod using what abilities and knowhow I have...

If somone wants to make textures for this mod however.. go right ahead.. all id like to do is review them before id use em..

Shit. For some reason I thought that E&E was legal?

Linux distributions can't spread content that is infringing copyrights.
That is why Spring needs legal content.

The other problem is that once Spring starts to eat market share people within the Spring community will get a CaD order.
That is a legal letter from Atrai lawyers that states they must "Cease and Desist" infringement on Atari copyright.
Something like that will freak you out so that is why it's important to get legal content.

Thats why you MUST have the game to play spring. It even tells you thta before you download it. I think. Luckily, I do have OTA, Both disks, But not the expansions :D

Untill replacement textures cna be made we can always use Xect &Mynn or the ever fruitful Nanoblobz.

Eitherway I find it hard to believe that since 1997 (9 years) nobody has attempted to recreate the cavedog textures

Becasue theres been no need. I mean, you have to own TA to play it. As anyone else made a New TA engine other than the SYS?

Strictly speaking this is true... but that probably isn't very solid legally. It's the same thing if the original napsters had said "download whatever you want but you must have bought the CD to listen to it". The spring download distributes a huge ammount of cavedog models and textures and we don't have any check to make sure that the user has acctually bought the original games before basicly allowing them to download that content for free. There are other things a person could do with that content asside from just playing spring. If there was a decent mod out that was all comunity made content spring could distribute with that as the default and cease and desist orders could then only be made to mod authors, which would be much less of a risk to the spring comunity.

TA3D is a clone of Total Annihilation but in real 3D using OpenGl. TA3D is currently developped under linux and there will be no Windows port until TA3D become something playable. Therefore TA3D is optimised for linux and requires(version 0.1.0):

There exact words. In other words, Not done yet.

well instead of arguing or discussing further the texture issues, maybe some creative people could put together some texturesm for E&E to use?

Otherwise this is just pissing in the wind.
