Missing maps
Is it me or are a growing nubmer of people postign maps at FU and not starting threads here, then falling into the pitfall of them not being sorted, and people never seeing them? That and I dotn know fi a lot of people browse the maps category unelss thye're looking for something in particular..
An example would be real mars which i've sene no forum stuff about, or Ocean hills..
If these maps are being released on the forum, please somebody link me to them!

I've knowticed it too... I've always just assumed they were made by people who weren't forumers here, like the TAU guys or something. Some of them look pretty decent and would probably get some serious play time if they were advertized as well.
Please, if you make a map post it here! If it isn't rainbowroad or whatever that thing was called then there's gonna be someone here who wants to try it out!

Well, IMHO, the best advertising a map can get (even better than any kind of thread in here) is just being hosted.
If a map is cool, the players will remember and chose it again...
But recently, the sheer number of maps becomes a bit unhandy in the client. Sortable lists with multiple properties , or at least a resizeable selection windows would help quite a bit.

perhaps it would help if there were different ways to look at them in the Spring lobby...such as sorting by date created, #of downloads, or perhaps a type. It'd be nice if the person who uploaded the map could choose between something like: Land, water, damaging water, urban, space, mix, beta, misc.
There is some color coding in the Spring lobby where you download them...but it's not very clear on what it means (font is red/green/yellow).[/i]

Part of the issue could be that people tend to be really, well, not so nice to people who post a thread about their new map.

Might just discourage people posting their maps on this forumA. You posted your map in the mapping forum where it got critiqued by MAPPERS! WE KNOW HOW TO MAP, WE HAVE MADE MAPS, STOP BEING LAZY AND BLAMING LEACHERS FOR THE MISTAKES YOU MADE!

Pretty low-priority thing, but I agree, it'd be nice if there was a button to delete maps. Problem comes when maps are released as packages, such as Sparewood which is part of the River Dale set. A person might unwittingly delete a whole set of maps when there was really just one they didn't like.
It's very elitist but I think there should be some way of classifying maps that are the most played and having them be in a smaller, more easily-browsed page. This would need to be something dynamically generated daily or whatever, based on usage in TASClient. As of now I don't think TASClient keeps any track of what maps are played, but I really think that should change.
There are so many maps which are, to be honest, just not at all fun or well-designed. Too many people make a map just because they thought it'd be an interesting project or whatever. They have no real goal in mind, just "I wanna make a map that's k00lzo0rzz!". People need to actually have a plan in mind, like:
"I want to make a map that's playable in a 3-way FFA because there's just not a whole helluvah lot of 3-way FFA maps and I enjoy that kind of game. To keep my map from being redundant, I will:
a) have [very little/lots] of metal/have [very little/lots] of wind/have [very little/lots] of geothermal vents
b) features water in ways that would potentially open up previously unthought-of methods of attack
c) features unique terrain deviations
d) makes elegant use of typemap to make "highways" from one area to the next
e) have [low/high] gravity
d) give some players an advantage in metal while others have an advantage in energy
f) make clever use of terrain features
g) make a normally uncommon strategy more useful
h) have areas which can only be traversed with aircraft
i) have water that slowly damages units but which could possibly be used for getting the jump on someone by using amphibious units
j) be specially designed with one mod in mind because most maps don't play very well/convincingly with aforementioned mod
...and so on. Making maps for the sake of maps, just like making units for the sake of units, is counterproductive.

For the record I'll be editing the posts of anyone who decides to comment on the quality of a map in a negitive way without making an effort to be constructive about it. Possibly deleting posts too if people decide to make it to much work to just edit stuff out.mother wrote:Part of the issue could be that people tend to be really, well, not so nice to people who post a thread about their new map.

That being said, giving constructive criticism for a map will be tolerated as long as it's civil, even if the mapper doesn't really want to hear what is being said.
In the event of a post edit the post should have a sentence at the bottom saying moderators edited it, and the author should be pm'ed detailing why it was edited and what was changed with a link to the edited post.
As for maps, I think a page that showed the top 20 maps played this week with how many games used them, that got wiped at the end of the week would be the best otpion.

I was editing into the color red and adding a -moderator at the end so it was obvious the post had been edited unless it was something really minor like fixing obnoxious spelling. But Noize is incharge of this forum and the mod forum now so he'll have his own system and his own way of doing it. He might just delete flamy posts all together. It's much easier on us if we only have to cover certain sections of forums because we don't have to work all over the place.

Fixing your spelling is in my direct interest, because I know if I don't then someone's going to complain about it and 50% of the complaints are flames that I then have to deal with. If you make an effort to make it too much work to do then I'll just stop and let people flame you though.
AF, I said it before and I'll say it again, I wish you'd put a little more time into your posts. It's your shortcoming that is causing this problem, not other people's. Some posts are so poorly written that it litterally doubles or triples the time it takes to read and understand them. It's compleatly legitimate that it is frustrating to other forum members.
It only takes me 30 seconds or so to fix most of your posts and I need to figure out what you're trying to say so I don't accidentally change the meaning to do it. You really wouldn't be that far behind on your post quotas if you put in a little effort into making sure they are more solid.
You create more work for me because you're shortcomings bait other people into reactions against you. It would be much appreciated if you would at least develop a sense of humor about it.

Its fair, if you dont feel like decoding alantai's posts, just dont!Forboding Angel wrote:well AF, if you can't be arsed to take the time to compose complete sentences with half decent grammar and spelling, not to mention fixing typo's... Then I don't see why anyone should feel obligated to take the time to figure out what you were trying to say?
Is this not fair?

another thread desviated to spelling, grammar and editing other ppls posts..(effective censorship) huh... we are on the rigth track!
